(oh yes, to answer your other question - you need to figure your mileage based on what the tank mileage is divided by the amount of fuel it took to refuel (assuming you fill to the same point on the filler neck each time). Can't really trust the dash display for accurate MPG.)

Now isn't that a coincidence ??? That's pretty well exactly what my wife said. R

Just a thought....maybe the California Super Tenere gets less MPG due to added smog devices (cannister, etc)
CA bikes used to have a different engine tune from 49-state (cams, jettings, ignition, etc.) but with the bikes all having catalysts now, I think the tune is identical. And smog cannister just changes how the tank vents at rest and has no effect on engine running.

When you guys calculate your mileage, do you base it on the electronic readout regarding miles to the gallon or whatever, or do you do it based on how much gas you actually put into your tank? My digital readout on my recent trip showed me getting about 50 miles to the U. S. gallon on the highway. I was loaded and wasn't trying to be conservative. Just normal driving, about 70 mph average I figure. Just curious which is the more accurate method.

I'm back, by the way. You miss me? Oh stop it. NO, I'm fine. really. Oh quit, you're embarrassing me. R
I checked the readout against reality about five times: never more than .5 mpg difference, so I trust it. I don't have bags (more properly, I have bags, but no mounts; they claim they will here soon: sure they will) I'm sure the additional wind resistance is there to some degree.

I was reading the OM last night and noticed that both the instantaneous fuel consumption and average fuel consumption modes on the multifunction display are calibrated in imperial gallons. Since imperial gallons are 20% larger than common US gallons, this would seem to explain why many are reporting the computer giving higher fuel mileage numbers than hand calculation.

Odd choice of units by Yamaha for a US bike.

You can cut the relative error even further by filling at the same exact pump each time, as well. You can't really trust the digital display on the pump either, right?

I'm averaging 42mpg over 16 fillups, with a best of 46.4 and worst of 37.6. I think over this many fillups any inaccuracies in pump readouts or slight differences in fill levels, or any other variables you can think of, are pretty much evened out, no?
