This is an old trick, but haven't heard of anyone doing it on the S10 - till now -

http://www.wilddog.za.net/forum/index.php?topic=58404.1660

The idea is to drill a hole up high in the filler neck - the Sarth Efricans say you can get another litre in the tank this way. Not that you'd want to do it most of the time - the space is there to allow for gas expansion - but there are times when that last litre might make all the difference...

Ive already done this mod... I do it to all my bikes... There are a few "rules" though that I would SUGGEST if your thinking about this mod.... DONT drill,... the fillings will fall into the tank and could cause issues with filter, and maybe a spark ::007:: Etc..... I take a 'awl' "sharp punch" and punch a two holes, one in front, one in back... Its is thin metal and goes in easy. This is so all the air and bubbles don't spray all over the tank.....

Second and most important... DONT do this mod, then fill your tank and go park your bike in the sun.. It could ruin your tank and could be really dangerous. If you do fill your tank to the top in the summer make SURE your going to burn 1/2 gallon or more that second... Gas will expand and cause issues.... Keeping these few things in mind will keep you safe.....

Now the good part.. I have not officially tested the amount but I believe its more than a litter.. I can do a test and post up the specifics. Works great !!!!! ::008::

Oh good, I was beginning to think you guys were doubting our Sth African mates ;D

As Tabaso says but... don't park it at all. Ride it... if you are filling to the brim it's because you are on a mission. Presumably you've filled with the bike on the centerstand to get the maximum amount of fuel in. Now if you go and park it on the sidestand it's going to leak gas out of the filler and into the overflow. This is regardless of parking in a hot place or not.

So the key is only to do this when you know you're going to ride and burn off the first half-gallon or so straight away.

This should be the way to get the advertised 6 gallons into the tank - currently it's dry at 5.75.

Tabasco - let's know how much extra you get.

Cool! I plan to do this for when I'm on the road as I always try for maximum fuel capacity at fill ups then. Can you post a couple pics Jaxon?

TIA

I'm gonna stick with my little 5 l gas tank. An old guy doesn't need too many leaking tanks. ::025:: ::025:: ::025:: R

instead of making a hole, why not just spend an extra minute and blip gas in and watch it go down (as is goes around the filler neck) and blip in some more?...been doing this for years and squeezing in more when I am in doubtful range

For me, I do the hole so I dont have to 'blip' it at all... You just fill to the top like normal... and go.............

Just wondering how tough it would be to remove the cap and take the filler neck off all together.

I have done that, but for me it always takes a lot more than an extra minute - and not without an occasional splash-back of fuel all over my tank. The hole sounds a whole lot simpler!!!

Ive done it MANY times when installing flush mount gas caps.. The filler neck is welded in and you cant just remove it... Also, in many bikes there is a steel donut that supports the filler neck. This is so for people that just slam in the gas pump into the tank and start filling it does not damage or dent the tank.. Its not always just the filler neck to cut out. The steel donut takes me about an hour or more to get out with a plasma cutter. Also, if you cut all that out you have to be much more careful filling your tank because you just removed much of the support and rigidity. It can be done, but its more of a custom project. I find that many people in the "ADV" community wont pay to have the work done. Punching a few holes is free and take five minutes. Works awesome, fill your tank to the tip-top !

This is the first bike that I have had with this 'insert' in the filler neck. I find it a real pain when refueling, along with causing gas to spit up all over the tank.
I plan on cutting out this insert when I do the fuel pump o-ring check. I'll use a air die grinder with a really small abrasive wheel (after really rinsing out the tank with water and allowing it to air out for a while to ensure there are no explosive gas vapors). Getting additional fuel capacity is a added bonus.
