Final Drive Removal - Difficult!

Chaps.

To cut to the chase - I'm trying to remove the final drive. The 4 dome nuts are removed but still the final drive is tight on the swingarm and I do mean tight.

Is there anything I've missed? Ive search threads and an online manual but everything indicates the final drive should simply move away from the swingarm with the four retaining nuts removed.

I'm thinking there may be corrosion around one of the studs, this particular stud is the one I've used to mount the hugger.

Anyone else had trouble removing the final drive.

Use a piece of wood or rubber mallet and tap the studs. If you put on hand on the top and under the bottom, the pump usually just slides aft with some rocking.

Thanks for that but it's been tried with no effect at all.

The final drive is just as firmly attached to the swing arm whether the 4 dome nuts are tight or not.

Don't forget the centre stand.
I just had mine off and it popped off without any problem.

I'm going to assume you did everything necessary. There are no other fasteners besides the four acorn nuts. The splines that fit into the U-joint are notorious for lack of lube. If you have not previously lubed them, I would suspect there is some corrosion there that has the shaft stuck into the U-joint. Pull the U-joint guard, spray liberally with penetrating oil of your choice, along with the seam of the final drive pumpkin and the swing arm, allow to sit for 15 minutes, then apply a BFH to both areas. Preferably a dead blow hammer with shot inside and a non-marring body or face.

I've not seen an FJR or Tenere which was that tough to pull the pumpkin. Once all four nuts are off, lots of twisting and rocking with hand pressure ought to do it. The studs will limit how far you can go so don't be shy.

Now that wasn't easy. :-[

Detached the final drive from the swingarm to find [as suspected], that one of the final drive retaining studs was corroded and stuck fast in the swingarm.

Using the bracket supplied with the Power Bronze hugger left the counterbore were the nut would normally sit as a void. Salt got into this space and did the damage over winter.

I'm not sure any amount of hitting the studs would've shifted it especially as it was the upper nut nearest the wheel and pretty hard to hit.
It started to give when the final drive was tapped left & right.

The spline at the U-joint was greased.

All suspension bearings and pivot screws were good. The swingarm pivot bolt was perfect with a very thin coating of grease, as was the sleeve.

Notwithstanding the corroded stud lubing the swingarm arm pivot was easy.

Clean it up and use a bit of Never-seez. Mine was the same.
