I am on my way to Boulder, Colorado, to see my nephew and old friends. The shop, which is recommended by my nephew, only sells the above tires. I understand that Metzler makes a very good road tire. I would appreciate any suggestions for a long mileage tire. I do not go off road. Maybe an occasional dirt road.
Thanks for your insight(s).

My S10 came with Bridgestone Battlewing. When their time was up, I changed to Metzler Tourance and am very satisfied with them. Yamaha recommends the Bridgestone Battlewings or the Metzler Tourance for the S10.

::026:: What he said.
Also look at the Dunlop Trailmax TR91, If you look at the Tourance also consider the Tourance Next, reviews say it is better than the Tourance, again, like you I only go 100% road.

10 second review of the Tourance Next. Awesome rain tire. Smooth and quite. No complaints on the rear. The front tends to want to "follow" cracks in the pavement.

That's what I call a review ::008::
Question: could the front be low (ish) on air pressure so follows the cracks? just a question as I plan going that route soon, unless I go with the BW52's.

Thanks for your insight(s). I read up on the Tourance Next and it looks like a good tire of the type of riding I do..90% road...10% dirt. The shop, in Boulder, sells this brand. Again...thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.

If higher-mileage is your goal and you can find a pair, I'd go regular Tourance vs. the Next. Both have a good reputation, but the Next is just average on mileage (i.e., about the same as the Battlewing) whereas the regular Tourance usually delivers 1.5x to 2x more miles.

Note that the Tourance is now made in China and several on this forum have found that their previous favorite tire, the Tourance, now only lasts about 4,000 miles. If buying Tourance, I would first check to see where it is made. The Tourance Next however appears to be a very good tire.

I've heard this, but there are also a lot of posters on advrider that say they've gotten the same mileage out of chinese-mfg Tourances as the german ones. And I think a lot of folks just like to grind the "made in China" axe whenever they get a chance. No personal experience with either tire lately, so you pays your money and takes your chances. I'm a Battlewing proponent myself as they have good street grip, as good dirt grip as any 90-10 tire, have nice handling even late in their life, average mileage, and most-importantly, below-average prices.

Yes, I recall when they first started being made in China we got a few posts about Metzler being very strict on quality controls, etc, even if they were made in China. Several posters on this forum posted other experiences. One, was my friend Brick, who used to rave about the mileage of the original Tourances, getting over 10k miles on those and was disappointed that he only got about 4,000 on his latest. I told him about what I had read here about the Chinese Tourances and when he checked, sure enough his was a Chinese Tourance. He was really disappointed, as he has another set just like that in his garage.

I'll agree that the Battlewings are a very good tire at a very good price and have run many sets of them.

With regards to mileage, I had an unusual experience with rear Conti Trail Attacks (not the 2). I bought a set of the original TA 1's at a great price on line last winter, $119 delivered for a rear, a bit more for a front ,$126. I liked the initial ride and so ordered another rear at that price. Then on Black Friday, I found an ad for the same TA 1 rear for $79 delivered, so really jumped on that. I was really disappointed that I only got 3400 miles out of the first rear. I put the second one I had bought for $119 on and now have close to 6,000 miles on it and it is looking very good. Still have the same TA 1 front on and have a TA 2 ready to go when it wears out. So, one of my first TA 1's was an outlier, either the short mileage one or the one that is lasting a reasonable time. Neither made in China BTW. :) I still have the $79 TA 1 rear to go, so I guess that will be the one that tells the tale.

There are just so many factors that play into tire mileage. It really makes it tough to draw any conclusions without a huge sample size. One area I occasionally tour has unusually abrasive pavement that just about halves the tire mileage for any tire I run.
