FWIW I have had similar delusions involving a clean used one lately. ::001::

Did you do it?

I haven't had much luck finding a good used one. 0.0 % makes it seem painless.

My fiancé isn't helping matters. She says I can do it as long as I keep the S10! God I love her.

That's a lot of bike for $5500, would definitely be a lot more fun offroad. ::008::

FWIW I have both a DR650SE and a DRZ400S both were bought used. The DRZ has much better suspension - fully adjustable for compression and rebound damping and is much better off road. That said, if you're traveling more than 50 miles to your off road area on higher speed limit roads, although the DRZ400S will do it well up to 60 mph, then the DR650SE will do the job.

The DR-650 is my "other bike" and for me makes a perfect stable mate to the S10. ::012::
It is lighter and more maneuverable and cheaper to run. Much more fun around town or on dirt. It is also my "play" bike in both the sense that I tend to ride it like a hooligan, ;D, and that it is cheap and easy to mod. Not much of mine is still stock. :D. But the S10 gets the nod for 2 up, carrying a bunch of stuff, or any distance over about 50 miles. I am currently in Portland in the middle of a coast to coast and back ride (out of Orlando) and loving the S10. I would not want to be on the DR for this ride! But I miss it and look forward to "playing' with it when I get home.

if you do buy the DR, do yourself a favor and stay away from http://www.procycle.us/bikepages/dr650.html
Your wallet will hate you ::025::

I have owned both DR's (400 and 650). The 650 being more comfy and better on road, but worse off road.
For what I needed, neither really had enough motor on the road, and were still heavy on the trail (650 especially, the 400 is a thick as a bicycle)

For day to day trail riding beating, the 650 is a good bike, not great but good.

my $0.02

When you get back, I wanna try that DR650!
Sounds like a plan Wendell! I should get back around the end of August. I have to stop in Albuquerque for a few weeks on the way back and pretend to work, err I mean work hard. O:) so I can expense the trip. ;D
Greg, +1 0n the procycle link! He has a lot of really cool stuff for the DR and a lot of my hard earned money has gone there! :'(

Love my DR!!! I just got my S10, wonderful bike. I originally thought I would sell my DR, but I can't seem to part ways with it. After riding my S10 for a few days I start to miss riding the DR...Looks like both bikes are going to be mine for a long time. One thing I really find surprising is the gas mileage I am getting with my s10. in mixed riding I am getting around 48 mpg. In mixed riding with the DR I get about 50. On the highway I am getting identical mileage with both bikes...56 mpg. Is this typical for the s10?

I love my DR. I had both the DRZ and the DR. I finally let the DRZ go after I finished my mods on the DR

Mine is an '07 with '07 YZF450 USD forks resprung for the DR, YZF front wheel and rotor. The DR brake caliper bolted right on. The YZF triples slid right in also. Best suspension mod to date.
On the back, I've got a race tech reworked rear shock, revalved, and resprung. Inside the motor I've got the procycle 790 big bore kit. <big grin>
The bike as a whole, is great, I'm loving it so much more now with the mods. It will take on anything, climbs like a mule, and is comfortable as hell.
It's not perfect, but damn close. Just watch out for the slippery stuff :)

If you have a chance to pic up a DR, get it. It is a great all around bike in stock form, and even better when the suspension is improved.

I owned a very well setup '11 model for about two years. Great bike but I found out I could go everywhere on the Tenere that the Dr went and do it in comfort, bye bye DR. ;D
