About 1 in the afternoon in October 2008. There was some land clearing/excavation a couple miles nearby that had recently begun.

My deer hit happened at mid-day in the summer. I never saw it until it was passing directly ahead of me. I was immediately hard on the brakes which allowed it enough time to clear all but it's hind leg. All I felt was a mild thud...then heard my daughter sadly say, "oh, we hit the deer." My two other near hits also happened at mid-day.

I think Trevor is right. A decision must be made in a millisecond. I suspect it's all instinct at that point.

Glad it turned out as good as it did for you, it may have been..............well you know!

A few years back after we stopped for a break after running 336 (twisted sisters - Texas) my buddy riding behind me and me with my wife riding 2-up asked me if I saw the two deer that almost hit us from the right side and I said what deer. He also saw two snakes on the road that day I did not see. It maybe time to get some glasses but that may scare the sh#t out of me and make me sell my bikes. ::025::

P.S.
My wife does not see as good as I do, so we are good to go. :)

UPDATE:

Dropped the check for $9200 made out to me and my local dealer last night. When talking with the adjuster he basically said that they were not going to total a bike with 1600 miles on it if the frame and the engine were solid. claimed the 14500 MSRP had alot to do with it. A decision they have to make.

The list of parts is three pages long! The dealer who I trust, although doesn't know much about the tenner, said that the engine guards did their job so big thanks SW-Motech. Although I should note that Alt-Riders are going back on as I did not like the flex of the guard it saved alot but could have saved more. Besides the front impact the touchdown points were the left handgrip, the engine guard and the rear peg bracket. Unforuntalely the rear shaft housing, muffler amd turn signal also managed to get some scarps. So everything on the front except the light housing, windshild and instrument cluster is being replacecd. Everything that sticks out on the left is being replaced...damn near everything. The tank is being replaced. The topbox is being replaced although only the aluminum panels flexed no touchdown. On the side panel and all the electircal hard panels as the front impact exploded all of the structure that holds all this stuff together. Never did find the tool kit although I found the strap that holds it down.

The bad news is that the a hand ful of parts are back ordered until May 22, The rear shaft housing until mid June and the muffler and end cap until mid july. The good news...i think...is that i do not have doctor relase to do anything except motion exercises on the wrist until the end of may. Just don't tell him tht I was jonsing and took the dirt bike out for an easy beat!

The dealer will give me the bike on the 24th and we will add parts as they arrive.

A side note that I'm entitled to all old parts so hope to do some experimenting and possible selling some off. I see an enlarged gas tank in my future!

75% of motion back in the wrist. apin at a constant 3 spiking to 5 or 6 on occassion but at least it drowns out the pain of the bone on bone knee!

Plan is to head to Romley once the bike is repaired nd let the guys do a once over since they seem to see a few S10s and are only about 4 hours away.

Cheers!

I've never had a hit but several very close calls enuf to scare more than the bjesus outta me. Glad you are all together, bikes they can be easily fixed.

w/ all that's happened and all that's going on, sounds like You have things well in hand - pun intended. ::003::

"The dealer will give me the bike on the 24th and we will add parts as they arrive." This sounds very reaasonable and should let you enjoy the Spring quite nicely, and getting her checked out at Another dealer after all is said and done is not a bad idea, as are all second opinions.

All the Best.

Regards, dean ::001::

I wonder if someone here who has replaced their exhaust with aftermarket, could sell you a good stock exhaust, cheap? Let the portion of that $9200 check that would have been spent on a new stock exhaust, cover some of your deductible instead.

Growing up, my parents had a weekend place in Northeast PA, north of Scranton. I spent lots and lots of time driving in that rural part of the state. I don't know of any other place anywhere with a higher concentration of deer. I managed to hit at least three of them (with cars, all at night). Also hit a bear (also in a car) in 1990, around 4:00 in the afternoon, coming home from 4th of July weekend. He darted out from some brush just as we were hitting 4th gear, so I was probably going around 50. Hit him broadside! The front of the car was mangled and the car was never quite right after that. The bear, a big one for that part of the country, lay stunned for a few minutes, then got up, shook himself off and ambled off into the woods. We called the local sheriff. He pulled his pistol and walked a little way into where I told him the bear had gone, but I could tell he didn't really want much to do with meeting up with that wounded bear.

Anyway, the reason I started this thread. In the early 90's, my wife and I were headed to the house, just after dusk. We came over a rise, and I had to slam on my brakes. There in the middle of the road were three things: a guy lying motionless, a Honda on its side, with the front wheel still spinning and a deer laying there kicking its front legs, but otherwise incapacitated. I had my wife take the car back up over the rise to stop traffic and get someone to call for help, while I went to render assistance. The guy was semi conscious. I knew he was hurt pretty bad so I didn’t want to move him, so I just tried to talk to him and offer some comfort. He said to just move his bike off the road. There was an Agway nearby so I pushed it there. Some locals in a pickup came by, dispatched the deer and threw it in their truck and were gone in a flash. Eventually ambulance came and took the guy away. I heard about a year later that the guy spend several months in the hospital, but he made it.

Bottom line, I always think about that day when I get the urge to go crazy on my bike (and who doesn’t get that urge from time to time). I try and never forget just how vulnerable I am when I’m on my bike.

Glad it wasn’t worse than it was terrysig. Be careful out there!

no deductible and of course the dealer wants all of the check (made out to both of us to eliminate fraud...adjusters words not mine) so that's what's going to happen.

now medical bills are another story. hoping to have a scratch and dent sale at some point to use towards the medical bills.

It might not sound that way but I do know how lucky I am.

My job in PA has me riding the western part of the state from March through November. Usually about 12-15K a year 95% by bike. I've dodged more deer than I care to admit. And yes I have dodged a bear. Absolutely full gear every ride and brushing up the skill constantly had worked until this time when it appears to have been unavoidable since the deer slammed into me unseen.

Goinging to have to work on that one?

Living in the wide open Rocky Mountain West deer are freekin dangerous. I can't even imagine how to avoid them back east or in the NW. Scary! Glad you are doing ok.
