Cross Threaded mounting holes Givi PL2119 Cam

Hey guys, looking for some advice. I must of cross threaded two of the mounting points on the exhaust side. First, down at the footpeg mount, the bolt just broke off when I was tightening it. The thing is, there was no indication, it was going along just fine and then broke. I had mounted the whole system as a test fit, the took the bolts out to put lock tight and that's when it happened.

My thoughts (I'm no mechanic though) are to maybe remove the passenger peg to get easy access to that one and see if I can get it to back out somehow. Any advice there?

As for the other bolt/mounting location, it's the upper rear grab handle location, exhaust side. Again, all was well until I went to put lock tight on. I managed to get it all the way on, it didn't feel as smooth as the others, that's why I think I may have cross threaded it. At first I thought maybe the lock tight had started to set, since I put it in a little way, then moved to the others on the exhaust side, then back to it, so maybe 3 or 4 minutes after putting lock tight on the bolt and starting in.

Everything else went smoothly, just a little concerned and looking for advice on those two. Thanks.

I did the EXACT same thing on my Gen. 1. I retapped all three mounting holes and replaced the bolts. Guessing it is easily crossthreaded trying to hold grab rails washer bushing givi rack? Funny thing is...I mounting same Givi rack as well! Solution that seems to have worked for me is to get some threads started while tightening while Then tighten each bolt more while holding givi rack in place so the rack doesn't put tension on bolts causing a crossthread. Forgot to mention that when I messed up the threads, the long bolts at the grab rails seemed bent.

The footpeg carrier is pretty easy to remove and ought to give access to the backside. If you can't get the bolt out, you could pay a machine shop or buy a new carrier off Ebay. The machine shop ought to also be able to remove the upper one and tap the threads for you.

so you're saying don't remove the footpeg (I was thinking of trying to push the bolt out from the footpeg side) but remove the whole footpeg mount from the bike, then I have can just access it on a bench or whatnot. I like that Idea. Thanks.

As for the other one, I'll see what happens with this first. Then decide.

It's standard practice when assembling or installing ANYTHING that bolts on or bolts together with multiple bolts to get all threaded fasteners engaged a few turns by hand before tightening any.

Tightening fasteners locks things together, which doesn't allow the assembly to "float" around to accommodate the installation of other fasteners.

This is part of standard "old man knowledge," like progressively tightening lug nuts in a star pattern, sharpening drill bits, and knowing how escrow works.

All good now. For the record, my right side case can open with my topcase mounted. Topcase is givi v47 mounted on an altrider rack. There is an oh so slight rub.
