What prices are you getting charged? Is it value for money? ( I know it HAS to be done, just not sure if we are getting various quality of service from various dealers etc. )

Mine was £42.89 including the shaft drive oil change as I asked as it states in the service schedule that it needs to be done.

For me on Long Island was impossible to find dealer to do the job. Motorcycle is new and nobody has any experience working on it ( one dealer was going to "lubricate the chain") :D So i did my homework and found, that The only thing required to do is oil change and final drive fluid change. $60 dollars and 2 hours later everything was done by me. Dealer was going to charge me $360 . If you are not techtarded, do it yourself and save receipts. ::021::

I had break in service performed by the dealer I bought the bike from a couple weeks ago for $155. Included engine oil & filter, final drive fluid and checking all the bits and pieces that may tend to loosen (including spokes). I plan to perform future oil/fluid changes myself, but generally I have the dealer perform the first service on my moto's. Interesting note is that they put in Honda synthetic blend engine oil. Honda synthetic blend was $4 per quart cheaper than synthetic Yamalube. They said many Yammy owners use Honda engine oil.

What ever the fluids and filter cost me, I figure I care more about how it was done than they do. I've fixed too many dealer mistakes
To think they always get stuff right, besides it won't affect the warranty one way or the other.

Thanks for the replies and very interesting. I was charged £176 ( which is $270 coverted via www.xe.com ) which amazes me. I agree that its great to do the changes oneself, but then you have warranty issues if one is not careful. I guess once its past a few 1000 miles it doesn't matter too much and a case of personal choice. I just think that if BMW can do the first break-in service free, then why not Yamaha . My 2p . Cheers

In the US as long as you document the service that you do yourself, federal law forces them to honor the warranty unless the damage is a direct result of your actions.

I do not consider myself techtarded (see my other posts), however after my 2010 VFR 1200 seized at 2401 miles, I was so glad I had the break in service in the book and wit a stamp. You have been warned.

My first service was free, or at least I got it thrown in as part of the deal as I tend to with most of my new bikes.

£176 is a shocker of a price, though. No way I could handle paying that much. How did they justify that?

Matt

What was the reason, if it's not a secret?

When they dropped the oil there was a lot of swarf in the sump which blocked an oil way.

There was a recall for this from Honda, perhaps your bike got missed, or the problem affected more bikes than were recalled.

I wish we had the US warranty law, as I don't trust dealers to do a proper job, I changed my oil after the bike was dropped off, despite having just 150 miles on it, I prefer to do this even if a bike is brand new - ride it home and then dump in mineral (or at least a cheap semi-synth) as after the first few miles it should have picked up any leftover debris from manufacture.

It also means I am not so worried if the dealer does not do the 1st service properly.

I also did the FD oil as again I do not trust the dealers to do this, it is so easy for them to skip and so difficult for you to tell if they have not done it, unlike the main oil change where you can see the colour of the oil through the sight glass and the oil filter is easy to check.

Only going back to dealer for "free" first service to get the stamp and keep up warranty, another concern is as it is free it is probably more tempting than normal for them to just park it up for a couple of hours rather than actually doing all of the checks.

I will also go over the checks myself as per service manual as at best they will replace thr fluids, I can't see them going through all the torque settings in the service schedule - plus gives me something to do on a rainy day and it is always nice to KNOW beyond all doubt the bike is right.

Bizarrely, the difference between the London price and West country price is supposedly the reason why such disparity !! So much for yamaha dealership pricing. Too many fanchises around !

Just had my first service done today by Slocombes Yamaha, was expecting free labour as that is the norm with new Yamaha's in the UK, but was not even charged for the parts ::013::

I have to say I have been really impressed with these guys, they did me the best deal on an ex-dem by some way and even offered me a brand new bike for less than some dealers were asking for year old bikes. They were happy to hold bike for 3 weeks as I was about to get married, and they offered to deliver it as part of the deal on the day after I flew home from honeymoon, they also offered to fit any accessories I wanted FOC.

The bike turned up exactly when they said, with the extra's fitted (FOC as promised) and they were able to book in my service on a Saturday morning and do it while I waited - top stuff, be going back to them for the next service ::008::

On the down side unlike my BMW dealer they do not have the latest crappuccino maker, but I did not begrudge paying £1.75 for a Latte at the Cafe over the road for the £60 worth of oils & filter they gave me, and as for London prices being high they are still £22 an hour cheaper than my local BMW outfit so the first 5 minutes labour savings will cover the coffee in future ;)

Great news Rasher, esp from a London dealer ( in sharp comparison to Motocyclestore !! ) ! Best offer and price indeed. Phoenix in Trowbdrige are also super helpful and friendly and even throw in some Yamalube oil as a freebie - can't complain for a £35 first 600 mile service. Barry is a top bloke and their mechanic is very experienced and offers great advice.
