Compatible wheels

Is anyone aware of another model bike with wheels that are compatible with the s10? I'd love to have another set of wheels, maybe something aftermarket or from a salvaged bike. They want too much for OEM wheels, and I haven't seen anything used online. Swapping tires is a bit of a task.

How about the FJ1300? It looks very similar, yamaha, shaft drive, abs, 17in... Has anyone tried it?

I mean, in the words of Donald Rumsfeld, is this a known known, or known unknown? Not knowing if there IS a solution is different than knowing there is not. And in the absence of evidence supporting there ARE replacement wheels of mass destruction, are we all just assuming there aren't?

^^^^ I've got both sitting side by side, and an FJR rear wheel doesn't have a prayer of fitting a Tenere.

IMHO, only option for a complete spare set of rims is searching the webs for used Tenere rims and snagging them at the first opportunity.

YMMV

I would invest in a no mar tire changer, as stated, your issue is changing tires so address that. I've probably done over 400 on mine and I'd rather have it than 4 complete sets of wheels.

You might want to contact Woody's Wheel Works in Denver. Sometimes they have used wheels for sale. Other than that there is probably no compatibility with another model.

I recently talked to Woody's and they do have at least one rim for the Tenere. What they do not have are hubs.

I have a spare rear wheel for my 2012 Tenere I will let go.
I was going to do the same thing, have a spare set of wheels with knobbies on one set, and sport touring tires on the other.
I've since decided I enjoy the DR650 just fine for my enduro excursions, and will reserve the Tenere for just dirt and paved roads.
Pm me if you are interested in the wheel...

Great pic Mellow.
I just got a No Mar off the classifieds. Hope I get good at it. It'll be a cash machine for me.

As with anything, it takes practice but you'll learn.

As the season approaches my tire rack overfills...

If you are struggling changing a tire you are doing it wrong...

Out of curiosity, what aspect do you feel is at issue? Ignoring the loose cush drive, are the splines and hub size the same?

Splines and hub appear to be the same Eric but, dimensional relationship between the FD and rear wheel is completely different. Talking very rough tape measure dimensions, Tenere FD is ~ 5" thick, FJR is 3-1/2". Dimension from splines to disc on Tenere is ~ 5-1/2", FJR is ~7". Stacking up a FJR wheel on the Tenere FD you're ~3" short.

Pretty sure you'd also need a darkside brake arm too. ;)

Both of them are up for new shoes and spline lube...don't think I'll take one for the team and swap the FD's around!

Is it a must that the rear wheel has to has spokes? I was thinking about alloy wheels like those in my old versys

The hub has to (A) mate to the drive, (B) carry the right brake disc, (C) in exactly the right location on the axle, (D) have the TCS/anti-skid sensor, (E) in the right place.

The FJR has been looked at (previously in this thread), so you might look into finding a bolt-up wheel from another Yamaha product like a Star or VMax, but odds are slim that it will hit all these requirements. The three positives for cast wheels are that they are cheaper for manufacturers to produce if in volume, they can look better, and you don't occasionally need to check spoke tension.

On the up-side, the Tenere wheel is tubeless and can take a lot of punishment, plus be bent back to round in a lot of cases. You can also have Woodys lace on a bigger front or stronger rim if you feel the desire. Spoked wheels are lighter and don't have the brittle flanges of cast wheels.

Woody DOES have a hub, and a used rim, price laced with SS spoke set is around $850

I think a lot of owners would enjoy the option of cast alloy wheels. BMW has that option on the 1200GS. For those of us that ride gravel/dirt roads but not really off road, there really isn't a need for wire spoke wheels. That said, it's been a long time since I found any loose spokes at this point, so not a big deal. I likely would have gone cast, had their been an option.

In regards to the alignment of various parts, I suspect it would be possible with the correct set of spacers and in the case of the FJR wheel, perhaps the FJR diff unit as well. The big thing for us is that the ABS ring has to be of the same generation and location/size. The newer Gen 3 FJR, I think, use the same style ABS. But that's only '13-on. So somewhat limiting. Some days when I think I actually have some extra cash around, I consider calling Woody to see if he can work up a cast wheel option, then I realize there never is any extra money. :D

Swapping the FD isn't going to work either Eric. Center to center dimensions on the mounting studs are ~2-1/2" on FJR, ~3" on the Tenere.

Not saying it can't be done...with enough $$$ there isn't any problem that can't be solved!

That's It! Shoot the engineers...again. Not following 5S will get your ass tossed to the curb in Japan. The first S is Standardize, assholes. ;) How much fun would that be to show up in Japan with a translator, (like they do here, despite knowing how to speak English as it's taught in schools from youth), and teach them 5S? :D :D
