One more owner of both here. Currently own a 2004 FJR and 2112 Super Ten.
Plan to keep both. But if could only keep one the S10 it would be. The wife likes the room better as she is not as cramped on it than the FJR and I can not help wanting to find out just what is down that dirt road that I used to have to pass up.

I went through this dilemma last year. had a BMW 1100Gs, tiger 955 and XT660; sold all three and bought a pair of Yams, new FJR and S10. I had to have both as I just couldn't decide which I really wanted, and now use the S10
for all solo riding and the FJR two up.

This works, I feel that if you need a two up with luggage tourer then a FJR is hard to beat and the S10 (Ihave removed pillion seat and rear pegs) is perfect. If I had to have one bike it would be the S10.

I had a 2004 FJR for 7 years (110.000km) an now own a S10 since december (5000km). Like some people already said, it are completely different bikes.

There are things the FJR is better at (high speed cruising, torque all over, "lazy shifting",...). 80% of my km are commuting (140km/day).
It's a perfect bike for that. 3'rd, 4th or 5th gear on the freeway, doesn't matter, torque all over.
On normal roads you just put it in 3rd gear and you're set for the 50-90km/h range.

The biggest trip I've done on the FJR is Belgium -> North Cape (8500km in 18 days, doing 300 - 1500km a day). The bike is perfect for that, but with a Corbin seat, Helibars,...

I haven't done any big trips on the S10 yet (got it in december) but I think long trips will be easier on the S10. On the FJR you're still leaning a bit forward (especially without the helibars) so you feel it in your wrists and back after 400+ km (especially the day after). Luggage is also a problem on the FJR. When you see it you think "wow, big sidecases". But you realy can't fit alot in there due to the shape. Another thing the S10 is way better at (duh, it's an allroad) is that you can take any road you like. The FJR just likes clean, shiny asfalt (but once on it it's a wonderful bike).

So which one do I prefer ? You just can't compare the two bikes. I'd advise you to lend the two bikes for 2 weekends and do as much km as possible. Take different kind of roads (freeway, twisties,...)

Per DesertDaves comment on brand loyal. Before the S10 and the three FJRs I had a variety of machines but just prior to the FJRs it was many miles on two Connies.

The connies were great but always had something mechanical going on. Not breakdowns mind you but we on the connie forum were always having to sort out issues that should not left the factory. When the FJR came out I was debating another connie and my dealer at the time said that if I didn't like honda (i don't) then the yamaha would be a much more solid machine than a kawi. said they just plain do not breakdown and the worksmanship was beyond repute. that sold me an i haven't looked back.

although same as the S10 the FJRs had there small issues that the user was forced to resolve.

Range is better with the SuperT even though the tank is smaller.
Not my experience. I keep pretty careful records and my stock S10 is returning about the same mileage (41 overall) as my FJR returned, and the S10 is good for about 5.7 gal useable, while the FJR was good for 6.4. So the FJR had about 30 miles extra range. To maintain a comfortable reserve, I generally need to be looking for gas at about 180 in the S10, while I routinely went out to low-200's with the FJR.

I think thats 300km not 300mi.

I've just bought my first FJR. Ridden just half an hour and into the shed to get the mods started. Aux fuel tank, aux lights etc. Bought to replace a long-distance modded Blackbird.

The S10 is nothing like either, but is an excellent long-distance tourer in its own right.

14000km so far, and half that distance done in just 3 days. Its a superb long-distance machine made better with the auxiliary tank - I've seen 700 (km) and I like what I see. :)
