Cogent rear shock input

I talked to Cogent about updating my rear damper. Good, honest input and seems like a good value. However... I am looking for input.....I essentially have 2 options. No preload or a model with preload (ohlins). I really do change my damper settings a lot. 1 up, 2 up, luggage, no luggage, sport, tour, highway.., I have a 12.
So....The question. Do I go Cogent, save a few bucks, and live without remote preload?? I don't think I want to. What say you?

Great if folks want to weigh in, as always, but if you go to the home page and put "cogent dynamics" in the search block you should get 29 threads plus this one. Lots of good info is already here!

or keep remote preload by modifying your stock shock. A revalve and respring transforms it greatly. That's what I did and couldn't be happier. A new shock was outside my budget so I used Norwest Suspension and total cost including my shipping cost to them was $340. Would be even cheaper if you don't require a new spring. Terry is a great guy to work with, highly recommended. FYI he worked for many years at Race Tech. The blown Sachs shock on my Husky going to him soon also.

Hmmm... the shock I have from Cogent Dynamics has preload... just not remote preload. It's very easy to adjust.

OMG... I do NOT have a Cogent Dynamics shock on my Super Tenere!!! Duhhh... I have one on my FJ-09!!! I'm so sorry. On TapaTalk once in a thread I don't see which forum I'm on anymore. That's my story and I'm gonna have to stick with it!

At the time 180 lbs out of the shower and 210 lbs fully geared with full camelback. Also bike weight at 625 lbs due to add-ons; Rumbux, Jesse racks, Jesse rear compartment and tank bag. Terry set the new spring rate so without panniers and passenger I would be on the soft side of preload. My Jesse's loaded for bear add 90-100 lbs and then preload goes a little past midway and add a passenger to that and near full preload. Previously just myself and luggage I would be maxed out and still needing a little more. But really doesn't matter what your weights are Terry can get the right spring on it for you. Tell him how you ride and what you want targeted for max improvement and he'll adjust the valving accordingly. For me it was washboard road compliance as that just rattled my teeth out with the stock shock. Now much improved with only the shock swap and expect even better when I swap out the fork springs. Terry picked those out for me as well but I purchased online and will install myself when I can schedule the time. So total front and back suspension upgrade for me totaled $460 with shipping and fork oil included.

This upgrade made the most sense for me as I just couldn't see dropping $1,000-$2,000 or more into suspension. I'm sure Ohlins, Race Tech, Wilburs, Touratech, etc. would be better performance but cost prohibitive for me. I also now have a rebuildable shock same as the pricey ones so if it ever blows out on me a long way from home it can be easily rebuilt without a major delay in my trip.

I went with the Cogent shock. I couldn't tell you if I would have been happier with a revalve of the stock unit or not, but it was from the factory inadequate for the weight that I carry on the bike. I do ride two up a significant amount and I weigh 240 after the winter season :'( so I definitely needed an upgraded spring at minimum. The cogent rear shock has been great for my riding purposes and I have no complaints. At the time that I had the work done Cogent was a very modest option compared to the more advanced setups that I would likely never take advantage of. Rick is a good guy to work with and honest. I'm currently in the process of now going back to Rick and having my front forks upgraded as well.

Terry is The Man for sure. I'll be having him do a shock for me here shortly. He did the same for my OEM Sprint 1050 shock last year, and the results were dramatic. I raced on premium suspension done by the very best in the country for years, and I'm here to tell ya that there is absolutely no reason to do anything more than Terry can do for you with your stock shock, as far as a street bike goes.

I got a Cogent shock last August. I debated the remote preload and decided against it for money reasons. talked with rick for 20 minutes about various options etc and I think he said it can be done later if you decide you want it. then talked to his guy that builds them - very specific questions to narrow down how the shock would be built.

two weeks later I had it in my hands. easy install and once I adjusted the preload I realized it was easy enough to do - the collar rides on bearings - unlike most dirt bikes.

money well spent.

I was at 320 when I bought my CD shock. It shippEd adjusted perfectly!

My Elka and works performance on the KLR were not as nice as this CD shock.
My DRZ is getting a CD shock.
