Bumpy road clunk from the front -- not bottoming the suspension.

I ride some very bumpy roads in SE PA. I kept hearing an occasional clunk from in front. I thought the suspension was bottoming. But investigation revealed that was not the case. What I did find is that the instrument cluster shock mounts have some play. I mentioned this to the dealer service folks when they did the recall. They put a small piece of fuel hose between the cluster and the frame. This stopped the clunking. But I figured that the hose would eventually work its way out.

The solution is neoprene washers from Home Depot for $0.76 (no sales tax in Delaware):
FLAT WASHER
3/8"
9.5 (mm I presume)
NEOPRENE RUBBER
Dr# - 623 3 Pcs

Remove the wind shield, the small front cover held by push pins, and the headlight bezel.
Unscrew the 3 shock mount screws (phillips head with large washers).
Pull the instrument cluster out of the shock mounts.
Put the neoprene washers on the shock mount columns (the washers will butt right up to the instrument cluster).
Reassemble.

The clunk is gone...

Interesting problem. I was going to suggest a loose headstock nut, but I guess that wasn't it. Good job sorting the issue.

Welcome to the Forum, ejy. And with some good info to boot. Good job. You Pennsylvanians are starting to outnumber the whole bunch. Must be something in the water. ::025:: ::025:: Anyway, ::004:: again. R ::022::

That because we understand BMWs are over priced and large adv bikes really fit PA roads....the asphalt roads are as bad as some of the dirt stuff the rest of the world gets to play in. The S10 just fits the price and the roads. It's about time someone came up with the answer. Owning a sportbike in PA is pretty much useless.

I did forget to mention that the problem is easily spotted without any disassembly. Grab the instrument cluster and pull it gently toward the back of the bike. From the side look at the back of the instrument cluster. If you see a gap between the back of the cluster and the rubber of the shock mounts your bike too may clunk on bumpy roads.

Thanks for the welcomes! I love this bike...

::004:: to the forum ejy712! As Rem mentioned, there are getting to be a lot of SuoerT owners up there in PA. Maybe some of this will wear off on to Chris and he will pull the trigger on one as well!!! ::022::

Again, welcome and thanks for the tip about fixing the "clunk"!!

I'm about to hire those guys that used to deprogram kids that were cult members to work their magic on him......

There are additional problems with his love of lime green. Maybe I can get a package deal. >:D

Cheaper to just hire the goon squad. We still have to be seen with him, you know.

HaHa!! Yes, but there could be worse to be seen with.

::003::

Keep working on him. It's just not PC for the owner of a Forum to not ride the bike it is all about!! ::019::

The glow from my jacket and helmet help outline your silhouette maybe? :D

Tough crowd, you're making me dig deep.
