Howdy Guys,

I am adding a JM CB2003 to the bike. I plan on doing some long distance, and need to keep in touch with folks. When I am talking on my cel phone through the JM/Zumo setup people on the other end of the phone hear engine noices. I however don't hear a thing. It's nice crisp and quiet and I can hear them great! Normally if I have a wiring problem, it's crappy on my end too. As with most electronics on motorcycles, it tends to be the ground as the root of the problem.

So my question is, has anyone found a good place to ground? I have tried the battery, crash bars, bolts by the front of the seat, all the same problem.

Ideas?

I have the same issue, the CB/music/GPS AND incoming calls are pretty clear but some say when they call me they hear the engine noise. I believe I'm grounded to the battery. I don't talk on the phone that much but it would be nice to have it work better.

Interesting. I wonder why that would be the case. I have wired up my ST1300 with all the4 JM Setup, and worked all the kinks out. This setup on the Super Tenere is really driving me crazy.

Open to any ideas and suggestions.

Grounding to the battery is as good as it gets.

Try plugging a 'ground loop isolator' in the audio line that runs from your phone to the CB2003.

Yep, you need a ground loop isolator. Running all your additional components to a common ground is a good thing to do also.

I have every possible thing communication wise hooked on my bike and was talking to a friend at 90 mph the other day. He didn't even know I was on the bike!!!!

Here's my thread which shows my wiring. The only change I made to this is I had to move my Autocom dongle further away from my Zumo as the signal strength was too high and I was dropping the connection. I moved the dongle to the tool tray location and it has been perfect since.

Hope this helps.

The orange wire is the main power feed that terminates at the fuse block after passing through the power relay.

Howdy Guys,

I figured I would give you an update on the saga. I still don't have the noises worked out. The scanerio is the JM2003, hooked to the CFRG-02, and that is hooked into my Garmin 550. My cell connects to the garmin to make and receive calls, and the mic/speaker ports on the garmin base connect into the JM wiring harness, into the cfrg-02 not the port were you can use the ground loop isolator from JM.

When I am riding, i don't hear ticking, or really any engine noises. When I make a phone call, the person on the call hears garage, generally when the engine is reving. When it's at a consent rpm, they hear something but it's manageable. Just not for a long time.

Keep in mind, I have the erxact same setup on my ST1300 and it works perfectly.

I have tried different grounds. I have tried different power sources, including a centech ap-1 fuse box, and the battery. Nothing seems to make a difference. One thing that did make a slight improvement was when I relocated the centech ap-1 to a space that is right on the right side of the bike. But at this point it's still not fixed. I am using the st1300 as the baseline of what it could sound like.

Any other pointers? I have to be missing something dumb.

Brian,

You might want to talk to the folks at Sierra Electronics in Troy, OH. They are a distributor of J&M gear and have a lot of experience in installing CBs and other electronics on motorcycles. They may be able to give you some ideas on things that might be the source of your noise issues.

Good luck!

So I finally got it working. The solution was to take the garmin base and ground it under the seat. Then I took the JM CB2003 and grounded that to the engine. Then the rest of the items are grounded to the Centech AP-1 which is grounded to the battery.

Doing this cleared up all the noise. When I am making a call there is still a slight (very very tiny) noise when I accellerate, but most people wouldn't noice.

Appreciate all the suggestions!

Cool! So I guess you kind of 'tuned' the ground loop 8) Thanks for the closure.
