    R1200GS pricing

My good friend is in the process of deciding whether she wants a R1200GS or a Super Tenere. As you may have assumed, I am encouraging her to pick up a Super Tenere. Yesterday while on the web, she, her husband, and I looked at the BMW website and built a R1200GS to the spec that she'd like...

    Super Tenere maintenance

My local dealership has a very small service department, and is very difficult to schedule service into. I am somewhat of a mechanical neophyte, and so I am wondering .. if I changed my engine oil and FD oil, and changed my tires, and did nothing else until the 24k mile service, at which point...

    Mandatory recall coming: Hard start

Re: Mandatory recall coming: Hard start I have found some of the messages posted here, and especially a few PM's that I received very disheartening. As it relates to the private messages, I will say to everyone -- there is no need to be rude, or demeaning, simply because you're anonymous behind...

Below, you will find a copy of the recall notice that I was sent by my contact at Yamaha. Manufacturer: Yamaha Motor Corp, USA SUMMARY: Yamaha Motor Corp, USA is recalling certain model year 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 XTZ1200 and XTZ1200E motorcycles manufactured between Feb 12, 2011, and...

    Mandatory recall coming: Hard start

Overnight, I exchanged emails with the powerplant engineer that I have been dealing with at Yamaha Japan. He has confirmed that there's a pending recall that will cover 2012 - 2015 Super Tenere's (2016 is excluded, and for now, only USA models) and is to be issued Feb 1. The recall is for the...

Hard start fix coming from Yamaha

As some may recall, due to the "hard start" problem, my Super Tenere caught on fire. Yamaha was nice enough to give me a 2016 as a replacement. They also told me at the time that a hard start fix was in the works. Yesterday I received an email from Yamaha in Japan, from the engineer who...

2016 Super Tenere - First impressions

I've had my 2016 Super Tenere for just about a month now, and have put 1,000 miles on it. First impression, it's wonderful. As some may recall, Yamaha told me that the 2016's have a fix for the "hard start" problem, and that seems to be correct. I've tried to get it to hard start many times...

    Am I crazy for considering a R1200GS?

That may be the case, but if so, BMW should make sure their dealers demo bikes are setup properly. I rode a 2013 water cooled back when they first came out and had a similar complaint. Is TB sync an issue for bikes straight out of production?

    Am I crazy for considering a R1200GS?

Thank you for all of the replies. I went to Oahu and did a demo ride for an hour on a R1200GS, water cooled. The fit and finish of the bike is very nice. The motor I wasn't a fan of, but I could live with it. But at freeway speeds (RPMs), the bars vibrate horribly and literally hurt my hands...

    Am I crazy for considering a R1200GS?

I am considering a R1200GS just for something different, and because I can get support easier here in Hawaii. So I now ask you, am I foolish for considering a BMW R1200GS? Are they as unreliable as they sound? Are they as expensive to maintain as they sound to be? Any and ALL feedback welcomed...

Hard start fix coming from Yamaha

My 2016 Super Tenere, compliments of Yamaha has arrived here in Hawaii!! I will be picking it up on Thursday, once it is assembled. This week, I did get a chance to speak to the powerplant engineer at Yamaha, who had a few more questions for me regarding my bike fire. He told me that my 2016...

Super Tenere caught on fire today

How about this ... (1) Yamaha issues a service campaign for the hard start, consisting of a ECU software upgrade. (2) Dealers order the ECU kit, which includes an ECU with the updated software. (3) You show up to the dealer with your bike, and they install the ECU that Yamaha sent them. (4)...

Hard start fix coming from Yamaha

I have been told by the factory that Yamaha is aware of the hard start issue, and is working on a fix. Yamaha says it is caused by a mixture rich condition caused by a bug in the ECU. In early 2016, Yamaha is supposedly coming out with an ECU software fix that will remedy the issue. In the...

Super Tenere caught on fire today

The battery was the same one that came with the bike. Never been replaced. I feel like we're pointing fingers to other things (regulator, battery, etc) but missing the fact -- My bike caught on fire due to excessive cranking of the starter - nothing else Yamaha is aware of the hard start...

Super Tenere caught on fire today

I have some information to share with my fellow Super Tenure owners/riders on here. On Friday evening, I heard from Masaki Kobashigawa at Yamaha headquarters, via email. My dealer submitted a "service difficulty report" (?) to Yamaha, disclosing what happened, and the events that led up to it...

Super Tenere caught on fire today

I am very sad to report, today my Super Tenure caught on fire, and I believe is a total loss. I had a hard start episode while running errands. I held the throttle wide open and cranked. I'd estimate that I cranked for 1 minute continuously. I did smell fuel in the onset of the problem. As I...

    Yamaha's response to "Hard Start"

On a friends Super Tenere on the mainland I have experienced the hard start. This morning, I was riding our Super Tenere here on the island, and after stopping for a snack, after riding 40 miles, when I went to start the bike, it cranked longer than usual (perhaps three seconds), and then...
