Should I risk cracking the aluminum fork caps loose with an open end wrench, or do I run the chance of chewing up the head of the alum caps without using a 6 point socket on them? I only have shallow 24mm sockets..

I just brought home a 2012 S10 with 10,000 miles on it. I bought it from the second owner, who had the bike for about 4500 miles. The guy i bought it from said he did an oil change on it himself, and that was the extent of the maintenence he did in the short time he had it. I Just got the bike...
