Apples to apples.. Why did you choose a Tenere over a GS?

Let me add another two cents. Putting aside all these arguments about quality, reliability, technology, and so forth, a significant part of any motorcycle purchase for me has to do with the bike appealing to my sense of style, of what "looks right"to me. And the Super T looks right to me...

Apples to apples.. Why did you choose a Tenere over a GS?

Having owned several BMWs, including an R1100GS, and having ridden a couple of the newer 1200GSs, it boiled down to these three things for me: -better expected reliability from the Yamaha (every BMW I've owned has developed "teething"problems, or worse; vice versa for my Yamahas) -better...

    Windscreens that work?

After about 3,500 miles on my Powerbronze shield, I'm happy. At 5'8" it delivers clean, quiet air (quiet enough to ride without ear plugs up to 75 mph) and is about 20% larger than the stocker to offer more protection. It looks good and is well enough made, especially for its low price. The...

That you, Jac? Remember we do still have the 650GS and silver CS, so not BMW-free.

    Tech Spec Tank Grip/Protectors

I went with Devin's tank side protectors, and I'm very happy with them. His pattern is exactly what I wanted, and his price seems fair, especially given that he ships immediately and overnight. Because of my own stupidity, I got a lot of bubbles under the left side and had trouble expelling...

    S10 Fuel Consumption Thread

At 1,600 miles, I'm getting approximately 50 mpg in mixed riding (interstate, urban, dirt, two-lane country). This is with the stock screen and little or no load besides me and my riding gear (total probably 175 lbs). I probably do 50% in touring mode and 50% in sport. At 450 miles, I changed...

Anyone tried cutting down the stock windshield?

Tiger and co., Thanks for the tips/info. I like your little black screen, and I agree that it makes sense to have a small, summer screen and a larger one for touring and winter. Having just put in 250 miles with the stocker in the low position, I now know for sure something has to give. The...

Anyone tried cutting down the stock windshield?

I meant to add to the above that one part of my crude testing methods has been to move my hands through the airflow where it dumps onto my head/chest/shoulders and also where it exits the screen/bodywork/mirrors. I think this gives a lot more information than simply considering how one's helmet...

Anyone tried cutting down the stock windshield?

Theory about flips and lips I'm considering cutting off the "flip" and the "lip" on the OEM shield. Hadn't thought of punching a hole in its middle (as above), but may do that too, as it should improve (laminar?) flow. Then, I'd supplement the OEM with a bigger, cold weather/long trip screen...

    Show Us Your Panniers

Which of these, if any, holds (in right side bag) a helmet? I'd like to be able to ride and hike, etc., not have to mount a tail trunk, and still lock my XD-4 out of sight. Thanks to all for posting all the great photos and info.

    Harpers Ferry, WV

Thanks for the video. Even though West (By God) Virginia is my home state, I haven't been back to Harpers Ferry since I was a youngin'. Great to see it again. I have, however, made it to the Snowshoe area for some excellent dual sport riding. Here's a term I coined to convey the spirit of...

Asheville / Mt. Mitchell loop suggestions?

A trip into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park would get you on some great gravel roads. At least one of them is one-way, and the last time we rode it we saw mommy bear a three cubs, some elk, and so on. Recommended for weekdays, when you'll have the place to yourself.

Hello from the Carolinas! early observations; dumb noobie questions

I like this idea. One small variation would be to cut to fit a few tint strips (from material such as used inside car windows) to use like tear-offs for those times when the glare is relentless and you really need to see the data on the cluster. Then they could be peeled off when they impair...

What you did to your Tenere today??!!

Got a jump on that first oil change at 450 miles and after one week of riding Big Blue. Sticking with Yamalube in the engine and put Mobil 1 in the final drive. I'll switch to a full syn motor oil at about 3,000 miles. Still dialing in the suspension after blasting over some dirt roads...

Hello from the Carolinas! early observations; dumb noobie questions

Yea, Rod, but the remaining assortment is a mere shadow of what it was a couple weeks ago, when I resolved to "simplify" my life by buying the S10-----by first culling the herd. To make room for Big Blue, I've just sold a VFR, Buell Firebolt, BMW R100RS, and Suzuki Burgman (the last two of...

Hello from the Carolinas! early observations; dumb noobie questions

Thanks for the info and suggestions, guys. Modifying the brake pedal and adding the Touratech extension may be the ways I address that one. Besides the minor issue of the brake pedal, the only other thing I can find to complain about is glare from the instrument cluster when the sun is low...
