When comparing chain to shaft efficiency, it’s important to realize that chain losses are for new perfectly adjusted and lubricated chain and sprockets. The efficiency will decline with mileage, wear, corrosion and cleanliness. A shaft on the other hand does not face this degradation issue. There are probably plenty of chain driven bikes out there with high mileage and or marginal maintenance with worse efficiency than a shaft.
