Can anyone recommend a comfy and effective set of earplugs?
I find the foam ones are the most comfortable for long rides, but I can never get them quite right and they take a while to put in.
I spent about 150 quid a while back for some custom moulded ones and they hurt me no end...complete waste of money

I’ve used molded ear pieces for communication for years without any issues, id guess they didn’t fit them correctly. Use foam for noise, like he said, you can cut them down but make sure you can get them out :)

I got a pair of hard molded ones that hurt after an hour under the helmet and a set of soft molded ones that are great for longer days.

I recently got a set of those Motosafe earplugs shown in thughes' post, when I decided to experiment with using helmet speakers instead of earphones. While I eventually wasn't happy with the results, I did find the Motosafe plugs to be comfortable for long duration riding, and they do block out a lot of exterior noise.

I use these:

They are comfortable to wear for long-distance touring.
They have a decibel-filter inside them.
They do not block all of the sound, but they do filter out the harsh noise.
You can still listen to music or comms while wearing these, and after a long day of riding my ears are thanking me.
There are other similar products out there, but these work perfect for me.

I've used these and they're great for stopping the harsh sounds, but they hurt me after about half an hour. Maybe the stems are too long for under a helmet

Yes I can get the foam ones to fit with a bit of trying. I just think they are a faff to get right and take more time than I'd like

I have a pair of "custom made" ear plugs. My doc gave them to me with a free hearing test. He put a bunch of goo in each ear and let it harden. I don't use them when I ride, but I do when I go to the gun range. It's a weird feeling but not uncomfortable like Stefan's.

The custom ones I have fit okay, they're just a hard silicone which feels uncomfortable when my helmet is on. Maybe I should see if I can get softer ones made

Mine are sorta hard, but sorta soft. Don't know the material. The only time they bug me is when I get sweaty. I use my SENA when I ride.

I made a set of those custom molded earplugs years ago, using a two part food grade silicon that they use to make candy molds. I molded them around a set of earphones because I wanted some earphones that couldn't be dislodged when I put my helmet on. They worked great. And, since they exactly fit the inside of your ear, you don't have to really screw them in to get them to block the sound.

I'm starting to wonder if my helmet is just a little too tight, pressing on the earplugs too much and that's what's causing the discomfort. I was told when I bought it that it should make my face look like a chipmunk and it definitely does

Most of the time on my super T it is pretty quiet. On my DR though the wind noise gets to me. I have done 300 mile days on it but i usually use some ear plugs that are provided at my job. Yep im cheap. They are angled foam plugs on a string. I cut the string off when i used them on the bike.

Many, if not all, helmets have ear pockets for speakers. If yours hurts that bad, it might be too tight.

Yes when helmets started having space for speakers and getting all kinds of trim things on them is when i really started having trouble with wind noise. The last helmet i used i packed the speaker holes with bits of fabric to fill the space to keep cold off my ears in the winter and found it much quieter
