I've never actually used the service so I can't vouch for how it works (of if it does work), but I read about an app called Airdroid that you install on your phone (both iOS and Android) that allows you to control your phone from a laptop, desktop, tablet, iPad, etc. From the limited research I did, it appears like you could leave your phone in your pocket and control the functions on the phone via a device mounted on the bike. It might be a solution to the whole "damage from vibration" conundrum that affects phones equipped with optical image stabilization. You could put a sacrificial phone or tablet on the bike, and use it to access the navigation app on your good phone. If I'd known about this back when I was trying out an old Kyocera DuraForce as a GPS device, I might have given it a try

It's a paid service, according to the website; if you get it for a year, it's $2.50 per month. Otherwise it's $3.99 per month. I'm still a Zumo XT guy, but this might be a viable soultion for someone looking for a way to cast from a good phone to a phone or tablet being used as a GPS.

I reiterate, this isn't an endorsement, but it might be of interest to someone here.

So, I've put a few rides on it so far this year and can say that I have permanently removed my Zumo XT, tossed it in the closet, and hardwired the chinesium screen mirror unit. The only issue I have with this unit is that the music start/stop/advance button on my Cardo unit does not function with this setup...gotta use the touch interface on the mirror unit. This is a non-issue for me as the touch screen is super bright and very responsive, even with heavy gloves on. On the upside, this unit has a graphic equalizer function that really lets me tweak the sound output to my liking.

Bye bye Garmin!

Ahh...you had me on "ignore".

j/k

good one!!!!

So I did some research (again), how did you set your up? Straight to the battery or on the key switch? I have used GAIA a good bit but I am now wondering what happens when you lose your cell service.

My wheels are turning in my head......are you headed to Cabin Fever in MO?

Originally used the USB pigtail that comes with it to see if I liked it, just recently (last weekend, actually) hard-wired it to an ACC (key switched) power wire. She's a permanent fixture now.

Regarding losing cell service:

1) GPS does not require cell service (but you already knew this)

2) Gaia makes it super easy to download off-line maps to your phone (so do the other apps, I always make sure I have recent downloads of areas I intend to travel in).

Not going to make the MO rally but I am planning to do the Romney event in May.

I have seen some programs lose accuracy when GPS/cell is lost or spotty. I did not know you can D/L maps.....

installed: so far I like it, pretty simple and super bright

GAIA: so back to navigation on the APP. I looked for my tracks and it is a PITA. Also, does anyone else have issues when recording tracks, IE it stops recording as you use the phone for other things.....

Good to hear about install and initial thoughts. I have not recorded any tracks, so can't speak to that issue. As far as locating anything in Gaia, I've found it comes down to how you have organized your stuff (tracks, routes, waypoints, folders, etc.) and getting past the learning curve of navigating around in your saved items.

One thing that does piss me off about Gaia is that it does not allow for editing of anything you have imported (routes or tracks), you can only edit routes/tracks that you have created using Gaia. As much as I like this product, this may be a deal breaker for me sooner rather than later.

Sorry for the late response Jax.....

Yes using Gaia from my Android phone to the following....

I paid $229 a few days back, ben traveling for work so time is getting away from me. So far I like it as it is just like my Pioneer head unit in my 2003 Ford. The Android Auto has come along way and I think it is pretty good. Gaia I am still mad at........

I cannot find the DAMN LAYERS!!!! I got this email:

Capture 1.JPG

But when I go to my paid/premium account there is no Eclipse Choice. What the hell?

I cannot believe I am having such a hard time with Gaia. I forget the guys name from Colo, maybe he can help a brother out.
