Hi all, new owner of a 2012 ST, had her a few weeks and had starting issues, turning over really slowly and just managing to catch. Spends all day on a solar charger (no power to garage) Dealer fitted a new battery but she still seems to have the same problem.
I have emailed the dealer as she has three months warranty but I am looking for any pointers or issues you guys could give me?
Thanks in advance.

Step one for an issue like this is to confirm that the battery you're using is a good battery (even if the dealer just put in a new one). Take it someplace that can actually load test the battery and make sure the output is correct. Not sure how you'd go about this in the UK; in the US, pretty much every auto parts store can load test a battery.

These bikes tend to crank slowly on the OEM Yuasa battery, and if the dealer replaced your battery with one of the same capacity, you could still be having the same issue. The OEM battery is a Yuasa YTZ12S. They put out 210 CCA. A lot of guys in here replace that battery with a YTZ14S (or a similar aftermarket battery). It's the same dimensions as the 12S, but puts out 230 CCA; it'll spin the engine a lot faster and authoritatively.

Try jumping it from a car, but without the car running. If it has plenty of starting power, follow the advice from RCinNC.

Make sure the starter solenoid connections are fitted tightly. It lives just above the battery. See post #6 here for exact location,

Yep, mine would roll over like it was very weak. 5 yr old battery. I replaced it with a lithium battery that has 387 CCA. Spins it right over.

What bike are you coming from? My neighbor has a 'Wing that has a starter that spins twice as fast as mine. He tells me I need a new battery every time he hears my Tenere start up. She will never spin very quick.

Welcome to the group:)

Since you say, “Spends all day on a solar charger”… I make the following observation:

I had a solar charger once, and when it finally failed… it continued to overcharge the battery, and eventually killed the battery.

Just a thought:)

I have two wings. A 1200 and an 1800. I know how they spin. My Tenere spins like them with the 387 CCA Scorpion lithium battery. It sure is nice.

Curious how many cca are the wing batteries?
I'd have to look and right now it's below zero so don't want to pull a panel off. Let me do a little searching.
Well it a quick Google search for stock 2015 Goldwing is 320 CCA.
The other is my original bike I bought new in April of 85 (1984 Goldwing 1200 Standard)

I got myself a YTZ14s in May 2021, 3 winters in and approx 18k miles later and it starts quickly, every time. Never been on a battery tender.

So, we have a 2012, with c.19k miles, that seems sluggish to start....when compared with your previous 2007 FJR. Can we assume there are no codes showing on the dash?

My first reaction is 'they all do that ,sir'. It's 2 big pistons, firing at 270, so apes a 90 v-twin. Like many big twins, Yamaha used an automatic decompressor system, where one exhaust valve on each cylinder is held open briefly, so the starter can spin up the engine initially. This seemingly slow spin up, with no instant bang, can seem strange at first.

Others have covered the battery/solenoid/connectivity questions but, being a 2012 gen 1 bike, there are a few other issues that may deserve investigation if you find yourself in an actual hard start situation. Firstly the CCT - has this been upgraded? If not, then it is possible for the CC to jump a tooth on say a cold start. Rare, but it happens. Secondly, has any significant service work, such as a valve check, been undertaken in the recent past. Finally, have the throttle bodies been balanced correctly - make sure the balance port cap is in good condition, not degraded/leaking.

Then, unrelated to the starting issue - while you are digging into background & service records, is there evidence that the headlight harness has been upgraded. You may need to talk to a Yamaha dealer, as OYB no longer carry the franchise. Then, some owners of early bikes have problems with the clutch basket, which can cause vibrations at certain engine speeds - many will have been replaced or upgraded, but they don't come cheap.

Hopefully you are worrying over nothing - there is a massive info base available with the 'search' function, or just ask away on here.

Super Tenere is very well known for slow cranking and hard start issues. I switched to the higher cold cranking 14s battery and it did help slightly, when the 14s battery wore out i switched to a Scorpion Lithium battery with 385 cold cranking amps, it starts better now than it ever did before but it’s still not as good as my Goldwing, i believe the starter Yamaha chose to use simply isn’t as powerful as it should have been.

This thread took a turn to focus on lithium ion batteries. Those posts have been moved to the lithium-ion battery thread here:

My S10 left me stranded a few months ago. Just got this text picture from the mechanic. Looks like it won’t cost a fortune to fix1708732021591.png

. . . . but it’s still not as good as my Goldwing, . . .
Every time my neighbor hears my bike start, he says I need a new battery. That's because his 'Wing's starter sounds like it's turbo charged. It spins so much faster than the Tenere.

Ha! The poor thing is 11 years old and lives on the Missippi River. I don't know where the moisture would come from? :D
Salt. Not fresh water… That was the question. Unless Tenman lives at the mouth of the Gulf and the Mississippi. And enjoys weekly water crossings. Just inquiring:)

For comparison, my 2012 Super Ten lived (mostly) outdoors 1 block from Carlsbad Beach/Pacific Ocean for over 5 years and still has no corrosion which looks like that on Tenman’s photo.

I don’t know which connector this is yet. I don’t ride n the rain much or do water crossings anymore. It lives on my porch with a cover on it.
