Hello to one and all.
I'm Bill Key from Huntsville, AL, in north-central Alabama. I bought a new 2021 ES about a month ago and am approaching my 4 Kmile oil change. My other bike is a 2002 Yammy VStar 1100 Classic with about 111 Kmiles on it, of which I put about 95K. I'm a grey beard, about 72, don't know it all, suspect a great deal and, at 5' 9", prone to falling off my tall new stallion in the parking lot. I tend to be a little slow but I almost make up for it by being stupid.
Things I need to do to my new bike. I rode it off the showroom floor in Henderson, NC and went, by the slow route to Amarillo TX. I had bought it with the "shortened"seat and almost everything else except grip warmers. On the way to Amarillo, I noticed my hands being very uncomfortable, almost cramping, it felt like. Also, I found the seat chaffed my inner thighs to the quick. Oozing plasma style. I also noticed that the arches of my feet, not being used to pegs for over 20 years with my VStar and the rise and pullback on the handlebars was insufficient by about 1 1/2"up and about 2"back.
I've put one layer of "Re-Grip" brand name grip repair over the OEM hand grips and much of the hand problem is relieved. The rest, I believe, will be removed by the handlebar repositioning. The one layer of "Re-Grip" thickened the OEM grips almost to the size of my Kuryakyn IsoGrips with which I am most pleased.
I'm going to go with the HeliBars risers. They look like the deal.
So!!! The seat and the pegs! What to do?
Pegs: Now, most of the time I sort of just move forward and fuggedaboudit. And I really like floor boards because they are comfortable. So I'm thinking about going forward in that direction. My existing thinking has led me to these are the way to go - "MK4 Pivot Pegz # PP-55MK4 (platform is 60mm wide x 100mm long, overall approx length from center of foot peg pin to end of peg is 115mm)" Website is here if anyone is interested in what they look like. https://pivotpegz.com/products/yamaha-2010-2018-xtz-1200-super-tenere?variant=37975851761858 . I'm also looking at some of the stuff Kurykyn has in stock. Now, I'm in no way put off by how a "cruiser" intended peg/board would affect those looking and pointing alongside the road as I ride by or park. So, anyone ever see full blown boards on an adventure bike? Thoughts are welcome, even those pointing toward negative. I have given thought to break and gear controls and how access to them using boards/wide pegs in the dirt while standing. I say this to move that "starting" portion of the comments past the, sort of basic, comments.
Seat: I tend to ride commando style, wearing CE2 level denim pants. This, I think, proved almost "fatal" in my first ride. By the time I got home the pain was almost unbearable when I would sit down on the saddle (again, it's the "lowered" OEM seat). I attribute it to the non-slip seat cover on my bike...I assume its the same on all Sup 10s? My first thoughts on this is to start wearing some kind of "long"underwear, maybe something smooth and slick like what the ladies are wearing as outerwear. Anybody had similar problems with this seat?
Finally, I had a HELL of a time getting registered here. Man!! I started trying to register the day after my initial ride and finally lucked out today. It'll be worth the trouble, I'm sure!

Here’s a warm welcome from South Wales U.K. I spent a few really good weeks in Alabama about 15 years ago, mostly in and around Mobile but also in and around Fairhope where I was most fortunate to witness ”the Jubilee”, very memorable! I was made to feel very welcome by all the lovely people I met in Alabama.
You will get plenty of ideas and suggestions in answer to your questions and you won’t have to wait too long!

Quite the first post there Bill.
I mounted highway pegs on my skid plate. I’m sure you could do the same with some filing floorboards but trying to get controls up there would be difficult.

Hi Bill, great name. All the best people are named Bill... but I might be biased.

I have 3 seats for my bike: the factory low (hate it), Sargent seat (better, but not great) and a Russell Day Long (expensive but worth every penny). I tend to use the RDL exclusively. If I use one of the other seats then I wear motorcycle specific underwear such as Skivvies. Pretty much removes all chaffing, and in the rare instance wear I'm riding multiple days I might add Body Glide to my inner thighs as an extra measure. I'm too old to deal with pain if I can avoid it.

Can't help with floorboards, but coming from decades of cruiser riding myself, I have felt the same way you do. Over time I have gotten use to pegs, but I'll probably add highway pegs to my crash bars as a comfort measure.

Welcome aboard Bill.

I wouldn’t go with the boards, some extra wide pegs and highway pegs to the crashbars or whatever is a better choice in my opinion. Seatwise i feel you, the OE seat killed me after only 20min. Now I have the Touratech seat that gives me 1,5H before I need a break. Long enough for me. Always wearing the HELD fabric motorcycle outfit (see my avatar) or in hot temperatures a motorcycle denim pants.

From the Netherlands,
Stefan

Yeah, I actually hadn't thought about that...dunno how to make it work right off the top of my head. Do you have an opinion on the PivotPegz I talked about?

Whoa! Longdog! Lot of good stuff down in that part of 'Bama. Can't beat the seafood, not with a stick! Lots of people moving in and around the Redneck Riviera. My brother lives down that way. And, as it happens, I've spent what many people would call a lot of time in the UK but it was down around Somerset and Taunton and Portland. More great food and wonderful people. I stayed in a 500 year old pub/hotel called "The Mildmay Arms" in Queen Camel. Wonderful memories.

OK, Bill! Thanks for the welcome and the info. The only skivvies I've ever heard of were back in '71 in my Great Uncle Sam's canoe club bootcamp. So, I'm definitely gonna check them out. Also, after all these years, I dunno anything about Body Glide. That'll be on the list to try, tambien. "...motorcycle specific underwear...", who'duvthunk?
Good gouge on the seat, too. Can you speak just a little to the RDL benefits/advantages?

Stefan! Thanks for the welcome from the land of the Zuider Zee! Ok, now I gotta check out the Touratech seat as well as the RDL mentioned by Bill_C. Can you speak anymore about the specific benefits, in your eyes, of the Touratech seat over the OEM short?

another welcome from S Wales UK
Hello bimota! Wales seems to be well represented here. Beautiful country, Wales. Or so I'm told...never actually been there although I might have been on a train that passed through it back in 1973 (month long vacation thanks to my rich Uncle. I was stationed in the south of Spain on the Costa de la Luz for four glorious years! Changed my life.).

The best way I can describe the RDL is that it is somewhat reminiscent of a Mustang seat on a cruiser. A bit wide at the back with plenty of support, but narrow enough at the front that I can still stand on the pegs comfortably. I can do several hours in the saddle without even the slightest discomfort. They use different foam thicknesses to relieve hot spots but still provide support. It does raise you a bit, so that might be a concern.

There is another seat maker out in Tennessee named Terry's Custom Seats that seem to do a similar seat to Russell's. Might be worth a trip to check them out.

One final thought, you might try an Airhawk seat cover. I used them for years on stock seats and they always gave me an extra hour or two in the saddle before needing a break.

Here is a picture off of Russell's site. Not mine, but will give you an idea of what an RDL looks like on an S10

Whoa!!! One picture and all that...!
Yep that's different enough to engender hope. I wonder, is the front seat alone compatible with the OEM rear? I'm probably never going to two up and being able to cut the price in (probably) half will be an even greater plus!
Interesting side note: I bought my present VStar w/about 20 Kmiles on the odo. It had Mustang pilot and navigator seats installed. I hated them. And, now the situation may well be reversed.

Glad to help. To answer your question about the setup, I run my RDL with the stock Yamaha pillion because I never ride two-up either. They mount up perfectly.

Well it is an upgrade but in my case not suitable for an IBA. @bimota on the other hand thinks it is absolutely perfect and has circled the globe 4 times on it. Sort of…
It is wider, better supporting and harder (=OE was to soft for me).
