Has anyone else experienced arthritis?

Seem to have age creeping in and have problems with a swollen left hand and fore arm, and no, I'm not left handed!!

This is causing me to have problems with clutch use especially town/city work.

I really don't want to sell my S10, I really like the bike and have it loaded with all the goodies I like; I've tried a DCT AT and it's very nice but it's not my S10 and starting all over agian with the goodies is so expensive..

Has anyone else had similar problems and managed to overcome it?

Thanks
Nick

Whilst I don't have it on my left hand, I do suffer with it on my right, two fingers and also both knees, really the only thing is movement and exercise, combined with a little ibuprofen helps. There is not much you can do to stop it, only slow it's progress. I also believe that genetics plays a huge role, also what you did or did not do when young. My downfall are my parents and decades of extreme heavy lifting combined with bodybuilding. Diet can play an important factor, but this needs to be from an extremely young age. Good oils may 'ease' the pain, I encourage my daughter ( she's 8) to take cod liver oil with glucosamine as she is very active in sports.
There is no real single solution, I also don't think the damp British climate is much help in that regards. I hope you keep riding, even if it means taking to a DCT or even.......a scooter! There, I said it.

That does look fun but I really don't want to get to the scooter option too soon.

I have started struggling since breaking two fingers on the hand last year. It's making the S10 clutch lever feel really heavy.

Perhaps I'll have to bite the bullet and sell the pride and joy and get the AT.

I believe off the road do an upgrade to the clutch master cylinder which may be worth a look at.

That sounds interesting, I thought my 2014 ZE had the upgrade already, is there something else I'm not aware of?

I've just fitted one of these.... Reduces clutch pressure by 25%....

My Tiger 800 clutch (Cable) Is a lot lighter than the S10..?? But the throttle is a lot heavier.. I've got an engineering buddy working on a solution for that but Stridey put me on to this due to my duff wrists and hands after my accident.. Makes a difference combined with shorty levers so your not reaching and stretching as much..

Here's a thread about the replacement slave cylinder:

I am full of it, hands, spine, knees and toes. My right toes get real bad in the winter to the point I can hardly walk. Having gout a couple times in the past didn't help them any. When it gets real bad pain killers take the edge off but for the most part I have trained myself over the years to block out the pain.

I would have thought the short levers would have made it more difficult....less leverage?

Stupid question but does the cold effect it? Would a heated jacket and glove help? It's not set in with me yet but my old man is riddled with it and it get much worse when
it's cold. Just a thought.

I've got it pretty bad in the knees, especially the left one. My ortho recommends a complete replacement there. Luckily, not too much trouble with the hands except the right one will cramp up after a long day riding or working with my hands.
As others have noted, glucosamine with chondrotin sulfate + naproxen help quite a bit.

34, played baseball as a pitcher when I was younger before the concept of pitch counts and resting. I have problems with my ulnar nerve and bad arthritis in my shoulder. I can't ride for more than an hour without using some sort of cruise control or things get numb. I find taking about 3-4 Alieve half way through a full days ride works really well to cut down inflammation and shoulder pain. Spoke to an orthopedic surgeon about options, the guy didn't have any interest in operating on me and basically told me to suck it up. I'm still interested in getting a second opinion next year.

Yes the cold makes it much, much worse.

I am allergic to ibuprofen which is a real bummer and would be very interested in any alternative to it if anyone knows of something. Don't have it yet but believe it's on the way.

The trick is finding an anti-inflammatory that has the least intrusive side effects. I've been mulling this over for the past year since seeing the orthopedic surgeon. Liver damage or surgery? Which is worse. Sometimes cortisone shots help, but weight gain is another side effect. I chose to avoid cortisone when given the option.

I'm not sure everyone will get liver damage, for nearly a decade and a half I was taking between 2000-2400mg of ibuprofen every single day, every single day! For various injuries I picked up along the way, just so I could make it through a day, along with a few other heavier meds. The pain was / is constant, eventually you get accustomed to the pain, I managed to get off most when I had bi-lateral hip replacement almost three years ago. I have a completely healthy liver and kidneys, guess I dodged that bullet! Sure there are days when I take upto 600mg of ibuprofen, but that is now max a day or two per month. Everyone's pain tolerance is different, mine is worse first thing in the morning then I kind of forget about it until I hit the sack.
I hope you find you good place, but as yet there is no real cure.
