Friend asked I could come help with the oil change ?

Totally kidding.... He already had the front end pulled off and asked if I could stop by and help pull the ES rear shock. This lead to pulling the rear end off to get all the ES stuff off the bike. And then continuing on with a lot of service. He is modifying the front and rear suspension to deal with all the off road. The stock ES can't cope. We also lubed the dry steer tube bearings and added the hot rod NGK plugs and cleaned the air filter. When I arrived at his shop the bike was like this and I had to take some photos, Ive never seen a bike "hung up" up like this... It actually worked really well, but certainly strange...... LOL
After all the springs and internal parts arrive, we will get all those parts installed and sorted, and the bike will be put all back together. I thought it would be a fun laugh looking at these photos...... (and "the oil change").................... LOL

Side note: please don't forget that the bikes basically come with virtually no lube on most of the bearings. They are mostly all dry and crusty. This bike only has about 5K miles and everything was dry and crunchy already. Also on the 14+ models, the top steer tube race are not being installed "square". Almost all the ones I come across 14+ are wearing on 180* of the race. And creating some funky wear. If you pull it apart, tap the race until it seats and is then square.
- Swing arm pivot / bearings, dry
- Steer tube, very little lube
- Rear brake pedal, dry as a bone
- Shifter, dry
- Lower suspension linkage, dry as a bone, crusty
- Front fork oil after 5K miles, dark, with sparkly sparkles (he smashed it on a BDR though..... LOL)

If you want some winter maintenance , here are a few things to keep ya busy....... LOL

Since when did this turn out to be BDSM site? Hahaha. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

That's way more apart than I would be comfortable with. I know my limitations. Good luck and have fun with the rebuild

My understanding was that those long needle bearing tube bearings used in the swing arm and other big pivot links used a proprietary dry lube, kinda yellowish in color. I know all the bearings in my Royal Star used this hard yellow lube. In the early years folks were boo-hooing all over the web about having to scrape out 'this yellow caked up stuff', only to discover later it was actually a fairly high tech lube.

Your totally correct. Those really should have some lube added. But the bolt also is a pivot that is dry. For wear and corrosion protection I alway encourage to lube all that up. I’ve come across many bikes those bolts are basically seized in the bore. And the bearing side of things was not a whole lot better. Without writing a boring book about ‘service’ people always hear me say “lube all that up”……… lol

Many years ago when I first got the S10, I read (maybe even on this forum) an account from a guy who dug all that yellow stuff out of the swingarm bearings and then later realized it was lube. I'm glad I read that before I ever did my swingarm service; I'd like to think that I'd have done some research before I grabbed a pick and started digging, but who knows....

Even with the yellow stuff, I still generously lube the swingarm bearings and pivot shaft with Belray waterproof grease when I do the swingarm maintenance. I figured it couldn't hurt. I packed the steering head bearings with the same stuff.

Curious about the ES suspension mods. Do you have more specifics?

with all those screws on the floor…it is the ideal scenario for someone to open the door…and the playful dog enters…scattering the screws all over the floor and taking some in his mouth:):)

I use tie downs hooked to the garage door rails to slightly suspend the handlebars/top bridge when removing the steer tube to check and lube the bearings. It is easier to work around rather than having the whole mess laying forward towards the gauges. My 2021 ES bike just went through the process two days ago and was found to have a decent amount of grease on the steering stem bearings which had no noticeable amount of wear (by my aging eyes at least). I use black and green tie down straps ;)

I had a friend who owned four times as many tools than I did. I always told him he didn’t have the right tools and would only help him in my garage. I’ve owned five S10s and have most of the pieces memorized also.
