Is there a way to increase the new-member post-count to say.................10 posts, before they are allowed to post an item for sale?
I'm part of many audio and hi-fi forums with similar, and often much tougher, limits before being able to list in the sale section. I would support a 10-20 post minimum before being able to list anything in the for sale section. Here is the requirements from Head-Fi.

I think education can be more beneficial in the long run than regulation.

It's really incumbent on the individual who engages in buying and selling on line to be aware of what scams look like, and just as important, to keep themselves up to date as scams morph and adapt. The scam where someone contacts you to tell you about "a friend of his who has the item you're looking for, and here's his email address", neatly circumvents the minimum message requirement to post in the "for sale" forum, because he isn't offering anything for sale; he's just helping out a friend. And it's really tough on unpaid volunteer mods to weed out every scammer that pops up on here like weeds in a back yard. You, your knowledge and your instincts are the first best defense against getting ripped off on line. It's absolutely not foolproof; smart people get scammed all the time (just look at Bankman-Fried's victims). But scammers pretty much rely on three things; ignorance, misplaced trust, and and/or greed. Even smart people can fall into one of those categories.

The ease with which you can now transfer money, like with Venmo, makes it even worse. People use it to send money without really understanding what Venmo is and isn't, and how there is absolutely no protection built into it. Venmo doesn't go out of their way to really explain the pitfalls of using this service, so it's up to the individual to make themselves aware of the risks involved.

Some time spent on google or youtube and searching for topics like "how do internet selling scams work" would benefit lots of people.

When you put a minimum post count in order to sell something, they will go into the new members forum and welcome 20-30-40 new members with open arms. And just like that they have the required number of post.
True..........But at least they will have to do a little work first.

They tend to be lazy to begin with. It is the reason we have location and post requirements for all new members AND why we suggest never engaging with any one who has not met them. “Robert Paul” being a good case in point

I've also noticed that many times they don't list their age or location. And then others have a first post asking for help with a very vague mechanical issue.

This is a great forum, no advertisements, at the moment. I'd suggest a monetary support. Minimal amount wouldn't hurt anything. There is the cooperative method, new people ante up a set amount which will be returned at the termination of membership. Or a small monthly amount to support the forum. Two factor authentication is being used a lot for payment methods now, maybe that has a use for forums. Using word games, or a set amount of posts imo is just a challenge to be met, there are some who have nothing else to do.

Just got burned on a fender deal. New member..no previous posts used a forum member name with an personal email. Requested payment by Paypal Friends and Family, which was paid, then he tried to fleece me for another $50 which I declined. No word since, no refund and the person who messaged me....yep...gone

Anyway...again a warning I should have headed:

1. New member beware
2. NEVER send money by Friends and Family (unless they truly are)

I've attached the conversation just as FYI
Ok, I had some spare time to kill so I contacted the scammer above bryangoofy@gmail.com and acted like I wanted to buy some Tenere parts. I gave him a fake name and and address. He replied back that he had the parts with a price. I told him I would take the parts and I could send him a money order for payment.

He gave me a name and address to send the check to. I will put screen shot of the conversation below. I looked up the name and address he gave me and it is a legit person. Whether it is him or not, I don’t know. The person also has a face book page. The FB page is of an older man with a lot of religious post. The FB page may be a fake page he uses. This may be useful, maybe not. Maybe someone living in this area could check this guy out.

FB page for scammer??? https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61556544182344

I moderate a few FB pages and have looked at hundreds of FB profiles and I would call this one fake. It's a new account with only 18 friends and when you look at his friends, they don't fit the profile he's trying to portray. He has one friend Jennifer that likes all his post and on her page she looks like a porn star. His address is legit for an apartment in Burlington, WI.

Did a bit of Google stalking and agree that it is most likely a scammed use of the Martin name by Brian Goofy for several reasons. That said, I deleted the image with his name and address because you just put a target on whoever actually lives at that address and the name of some 69 year old who works as a clerk at a Menards store.

Now - About that porn?
;)

I wonder how he was going to get his money if I mailed it to the Wisconsin address. Maybe a neighbor and he would watch his mailbox? Or maybe he was just BS'ing me?

Porn Star with a horse named “Trigger”? Very bad Karma *L*

Thought it was supposed to be your first childhood pet followed by the road or community, so I'd be Frisky Lindy, after a hamster and town.
Dang that sucks.
LOL
