OEM luggage capacity

When I bought my super T I was convinced and determined to make the OEM luggage work for me but after only about 1500 miles of ownership this season the misses has shown concern with taking them across the country. The typical issues of tight locks accompanied by water leaks has me NERDing out in budget luggage options and since I’ve been looking through so many dimensions and capacities I had a hunch the oem luggage was smaller than I thought.
I took measurements and this is what I came up with with actual interior capacities.
Exhaust side- 25.5
Non exhaust side- 27.5 liters
Top box- 24.5 liters
I had done research online before buying and I thought the side cases were 30 and 33. This overall capacity of 77.5 liters is actually smaller than what I had on my previous sporty bike so I’ll be upgrading to soft luggage for our glacier park trip.

I figured this info would be helpful since I was looking for it originally and apparently found bad info.

I don't know where you're at in your selection process but take a look at Mosko Moto. There's one of our members, @Don T and his wife that are using them. He started traveling in Phoenix, went up into Canada, back through the US, and is currently in Costa Rica. They are on a pair of CRF 300s. He loves the quality and swears by their customer service. By the time they got to our place, they needed replacement parts. Mosko Moto had the parts sent to our house before they even arrived. Somewhere down in Central America, they ran into other travelers using Mosko Moto. Customer service took care of them, even down there. Here's the link to their travelogue if you're interested.

I really like both giant loop and Mosko moto stuff and when I buy new that’s what I’ll do. The wife isn’t sold on soft luggage so I was able to find all used tusk bags and moose racing racks for 225 bucks which is a steal and at that price worth her trying them out in a trip before we buy something new.

So your OEM Yamaha Luggage leaks ? i believe this is the first time I’ve heard of it leaking, where exactly is it leaking ? Mine has over 100,000 miles of use and i have never noticed any leaks. The way they are designed it seems very unlikely they would leak unless they were under water. Other than the poorly designed lock system I have been pretty well satisfied with the OEM luggage.

The top box does, the lid has a lot of space when latched so it can easily tip side to side and it sits to one direction making a good gap, probably about 3/16” it wasn’t very wet but it had water and it wasn’t very much rain. Last year we road 400 miles in the rain one day and not having 100% confidence in your gear would be a bad day.
I thought the oem luggage was good too and wanted to keep it but the one box randomly pops open even if it’s latched and the tiger lock assembly is extremely difficult to open and close. I push down on the lids and I have removed and lined the lock assembly and it just doesn’t work well. For me the icing on the cake is the small capacity and I was going to attach dry bags to the top to expand them but my main concern is dropping the bike on them and being stranded a bag down. The mechanism that attached it seems like I could just yank it off if I wanted and the plastic latch seems like it would but right off with a good hit. It helps that I found tusk luggage and racks for 225 bucks

It’s actually over 1/4”

The lid on mine is a little loose but not as loose as yours seems to be.
I should mention it appears the person who owned the bike dropped it a time or two in the short 2k miles of ownership and they gave up motorcycles until I purchased it. I do believe this is what’s wrong with the side that is hard to open and possibly they tweaked the box as well.
I purchased the 2013 last year with only 2k miles on it and a dinged gas tank and rashed box. Also, I ride with a passenger 99% of the time so she leans against the box also and with how flimsey it is it could be tweaked further and that may have contributed to the leak.
As I said before not being 100% confides a bad feeling. I’ve been nailing down solutions to riding in rain year after year finding failure points in my setup and the worse feeling is when you think you have something water proof and you find it isn’t after you’ve been riding soaking wet all day.
