Why would the top box get in the way of side opening boxes?
It’s possible that top opening panniers may not open properly with some large top boxes, particularly if the panniers are hinged rather than the lift off type, but I can’t see how side opening ones would be affected - unless I’m missing something!
The givi large top box can prevent the oem side box lids from opening upwards

I am very much aware of that, which is why I have a Givi 42L top box with OEM top opening panniers. But your original question asked about side opening boxes, not top opening boxes being used with large top boxes

In relation to my original question.
I was looking at the Bumot defender kit, it offers 2 different sized top boxes.
I wanted to make sure the bigger top box would not hinder the opening of the side panniers.

As far as I know, the difference in size of the top cases is only in height.............The smaller one is quite short.
I believe they are the same size length and width.
Due to the way the Bumot side cases open (lids pivot outward) they do not come close to interfering with the top case.
I don't think the Bumot top-case hangs over far enough to interfere with OEM Yamaha side-cases either...........The Givi V46 top-case DID interefere with the Yamaha cases.

I absolutely love my Bumot set, and I'm glad I chose those.

Hello, I finally opted for the suitcases + the top case in the version with the most capacity.
I must say that the width of the set is quite small. In fact, Bumot advertises the width of the set, and at equivalent capacity it's narrower than the competition (Touratech, Givi, SW Motech etc.).

Bumot's 43L top case is still quite "small", unlike the Givi XL, and I'd say its capacity is almost the same as the Yamaha top case.
So there's absolutely no problem opening the side cases.

It's definitely a good investment.

Good call. I've loved my Bumot set... They seved me well over a bunch of trips and commute...

Only issue I've had is the top mount bracket cracking.... The main "go to cause" is off roading with it loaded.... I personally don't hold alot of weight in that top box and don't do much off-road. I do some, but never anything rough or abusive... But otherwise great setup.

Hi Julien, I am in the market for a Bumot set, but I am not sure if going with the biggest panniers or the one in the “middle”. My understanding is you ended up getting the biggest set. Do you have a picture of your final setup so I can use it as a reference? Thanks!

Why the smaller set? We may use our S10s differently, but I don't see why there's cons to going with the large boxes for the $$. I've never regretted going with the large Bumots.

Hi there,

If I understand correctly Highwayman has the big suitcases on the pictures you can trust them. I'll be mounting mine this weekend for a first ride with them, I could send you a picture.

I had exactly the same hesitations as you regarding the choice between medium and large.
What made me choose :
- I compared the total width (i.e. the ends of both cases) of the Bumot Large with other brands' cases. It turns out that the Bumot is the narrowest at 98cm.
- I only use the suitcases on trips or weekends and never on a daily basis when driving between cars, so I have no interest in sacrificing suitcase storage space to be narrower.
- suitcases are priced the same regardless of size.

I you have the same use than me, I suggest you to go on Large Bumot set, without a doubt.

This is a pretty good picture. They run just a few inches wider then the bars. I generally don't have issues splitting traffic. Though if I plan on a busy commute (holiday weekend Friday or Monday), Ill pull the sides and run just the top. I run the top 100%

But I do enjoy the extra space on touring trips.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Julien and Highwayman for the detailed information. I will use the panniers on weekends and/or for trips (similar to both of you) so I have now the answer I was looking for.

Now I need to plan and budget the purchase as the whole set is pricey, worth it, but pricey.

Thanks again!

I still feel the Bumot setups are alot of bang for the buck... You won't be disappointed on the expense IMHO.

Jesse Luggage has a new website, so they are still in business. I loaded up my bike this weekend for a quick four-day jaunt through central Utah later this week. I thought I would share a few pics of everything loaded up.

I still need to throw in my toiletry bag and flip-flops, but otherwise, all of my camping gear for 4 days fits with room to spare.

Because of the remoteness of central Utah, I am bringing 1-gallon of water and fuel.

The goal (pink line) is to leave on Thursday and meet in the Valley of the Gods, then work our way over to the Burr Trail, up through Capital Reef, then end in the Swell with enough time to get home by Sunday night. You are more than welcome to join.

Hi, this is my new setup for this season...
Bumot 40/36L side panniers and Kappa KGR52 top box. I use them all together only for longer trips. Side panniers lids don't open when the top box is in place, and that doesn't bother me.
