Windscreen brackets
« on: June 19, 2017, 05:18:26 am »
Hi,

I've got a '12 and have a couple questions i could use some help with.

1. Would the windscreen brackets from '14 and later fit my '12?
2. If it don't fit does anyone have any good ideas of how i could fit a birdpin above the speedo cluster?

The reason for these questions are that i wanna fit my satnav above the cluster.

Best regards
Thomas

Hello and welcome Thomas .

The 2014 bracket will fit the 2012 Gen 1 model, but, you would then need to buy a 2014 screen to fit the 2014 screen bracket.
It would be easier and cheaper to get a Madstad or Touratech adjustable screen bracket, this will also allow the screen to move up/down and forwards and backwards, much better than the stock 2014 Gen2 screen bracket.
As I get older, I am no longer surprised at what I know, I'm surprised at how much I don't know.

Thanks :)

Wouldn't the MRA screen fit the gen 2 bracket?

I looked at the sw-motech bracket, but it states it wouldn't fit with oem wings (side wind deflector). I've seen some pictures of the quick release gps mount with the wings mounted, any thoughts?

Gen 1 screen mounting holes are not as wide as Gen 2, so you would either have to drill new holes or new screen. SW Motech screen adjuster for the Gen 1 will fit even with the wind deflectors, you may need to make minor 'adjustments'.....

I don't use a normal windscreen, but how I've mounted my driving lights may work for your "birdpin". (I'm guessing that a birdpin is a crossbar. If it is not a crossbar then ignore everything in my post).

I cut some aluminium triangles out of 3mm plate, painted them black and fitted them into the angle formed by the windscreen stays. Although I have mounting bolts for driving lights passing through these triangles, you can see that I could just have easily inserted a long bolt/tube to form a crossbar from one triangle to the other positioned just above the cluster:

Each one of these triangles has supported a big light for over 100,000km.

Although instead of a "birdpin" I use a RAM mount attached directly to my aluminium checkerplate 'screen, this is how my satnav looks tucked above the cluster:
