Just wanted to get a feel from folks, what are your thoughts on the T700 having this price tag.
Good? Fair? Expensive? Great deal?

10K for a 700 is a bit much but the bigger, multi-brand, Yamaha dealers should have usual discounts; especially after the first year or two after release.

Sounds about 1k higher than I would have thought, but I haven’t seen one up close. I suppose 10k is in line with KTM and BMW

$10,000 is a little on the high side, especially after the dealer adds in all their hidden costs. There are some leftover Africa Twins for sale around here that are being sold for the same $10,000 with NO shipping or setup costs and with the Honda extended warranty. The Africa Twin looks like a better buy to me.

The Honda CRF450L MSRP is higher than that. I'm sure Yamaha has done market research, if it's priced too high we will be seeing discounts. Looks good for someone like me who isn't going to buy new, a used model in 4-5 years should be $5k or so hopefully.

I still think they'll sell out if the good reviews keep coming in. Obviously, since I'd like one, cheaper would make me happier ;)

Yamaha Perspective -

MT-07 hyper naked - $7600
XSR-700 Sport Heritage - $8500
MT-09 hyper naked - $9000
T7 Adventure Touring - $10,000
T12 ES Adventure Touring - $16,300

YZF-R6 Supersport - $12,200
WR450F - $9700
WR250R - $6700

So for $300 more than a 450 dirt bike you can buy a T7.

For $1500 more than a naked sport heritage retro bike you can have a much higher tech T7.

For $2400 less you can have a non-faired hyper naked bike that most won't take trips on.

For $1k less you can have a larger displacement hyper naked bike.

So, what kind of customer are you? Play bike? Great, hyper naked or full dirt bike. Commuter? Retro or Adventure? Sport bike? R6 calls to you.

If you're actually going to travel on the bike, you are really looking at cruiser or adventure touring bikes. Both have wind screens and are luggage capable. Some of the naked bikes can be set up for that, but they don't do it well.

I think they would sell better at a lower price point, but within the Yamaha structure, I don't see the $10k as out of line. In the 700 class you get a lot more stuff on the T7 than on the other two, so it costs more.

When you have been around as long as me, $10,000/£7,800 for a bike with today's engineering and specs looks good. In real terms the price of bikes is a lot lower than 20 years ago. For instance in 1997 I bought a new Yamaha XJR 1200 (not sold in USA)for £7300. In 2017, the last year the XJR, now 1300 (1252cc) was sold in the UK, could be bought for £8000 or less. It was a vastly improved bike with better power, electrics, fuel injection, suspension and brakes, but was killed off due to being air cooled. If it had kept up with inflation it should have cost around £13,000.

It's all a question about supply and demand.

As Yamaha is selling them (here in Europe) as fast as they can build them, the price most be right - and it's comparable to what the bike will cost in the US.

The T7 is selling like hot cake all over Europe. In most (if not all) countries people still have to sign up on waiting lists to get one.
I expected that it would become a popular bike, but had never imagined that it would be this crazy.

Personally I find the price fair - nothing more and nothing less.

I guess that answers THAT question.

10k is cheaper than its BMW competition in that displacement class. and that would be a home run I think.

and (I'm not awake yet ) meant to say cheaper than KTM , but it is true in any case if the price comes in as suggested .... it is a cool looking bike that is growing on me , it is a bit longer and a bit taller than an S10 , but way skinny and lighter also .

Looks ok, price wise in Canada.
It's $12k Canadian tire pesos. That works out to $8.9K USD. That's early delivery price. Add freight, and tax to that, in Alberta, likely about $13.65K CDN OTD. My 2017 AT was 16K OTD back in late 2017 when it was shit hot!

Compare that against a 790, they are sitting at $14 or $14.5 CDN, and not flying out of the dealers. So well priced against its direct competition.
The 2019 790R's are fully sold out.

I feel it's priced on the high side, but Yamaha is lucky in that there is very little direct competition for it. I'm sure they have done their market research and know that there is nothing closely comparable at the price. On the other hand, it's a very basic bike without many features to justify the price. I feel it should be priced at around $8500-9000 USD, but without market pressure, Yamaha rightfully figures $10k is marketable for those that want a bike like this.

Just throwing out some bikes that buyers are likely to cross-shop. Prices are from a quick google search, may be incorrect, quoted in USD.

- KTM Adventure 790 (not R), $12.5k
- BMW F750, $12.5k
- Triumph 800XR, $12k
- V85TT, $12k
- V-Strom 650XT, $9.3k
- DR650, $6.7k
- KLR650, $6.7k
- KTM 690 Enduro, $11.7k
- Royal Enfield Himalayan, $4.5k (holy crap it's cheap)
