Up until a couple of years ago, the local municipal airport was wide open. Odd, since it's a back-up to the Ft. Worth JRB for Air Force 1. But, now it has a gate, and key pad like you're talking about.

Frederick is locked down and has been for a long time.

At the far end of this taxiway is the road, going left-right. The cleared cut thru the trees is actually on the far side of the road and the only thing keeping drivers off the runway are a bunch of old tires that are visible in the distance.

Unfortunately it is also so close to Camp David the airspace gets shut with Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) every time a Prez stays at camp. Fortunately Trump didn't like the place ("too low class" he said) and Biden prefers to go the short distance to one of his two homes in Delaware.

It's the most UN-"controlled access" place imaginable with the runway T-ing off the county road. Fences? We don't want no steenkin' fences to catch long wings on.
Nice people to hang out with on a beautiful weekend day. A number of people keep campers behind the big hangar and stay the weekend.
