Why are people swapping the 2013 parts with the 2013. I own a 2013 tenere that's why I ask.
It's the 2014 part numbers that are an improvement/redesign over the previous years. The '14 clutch basket uses a completely redesigned dampener system, and it's almost a full pound heavier. The '14 tensioner is only different with the use of a micrometer, holding the two in the palm of your hand it's very hard to see a difference. The newer tensioner does seem to be a cure for the start up rattle some of the earlier bikes develop over the miles.

Don't forget the new cam chain tensioner also helps prevent CCT Failure.

Ah, I pretty much categorize the start up rattle as the beginning of the failure. You had the start up rattle, didn't you? I know Eric and DC had it.

I also had an ever increasing start up rattle in the mileage went up. My bike has been rattle free since installing the '14 CCT.

Don, I think most of us could tolerate a noisy cam chain. My point was to warn of something much worse than a Startup CCT Rattle.

4/27/2015 will be three month my Tenere has been in the shop. If they replace the Connecting Rods that would make every moving engine part will be replaced. The parts cost should be something less than $5,000.

My line of thinking is the start up rattle leads to the 'something much worse'. The cam chain should be under tension at all times. If folks lived with it, even at one or two percent, there would be tens of thousands of automobiles rattling at start up. Both Eric and Trevor lived with the rattle until the bike couldn't do it any more. Eric's just went boom. Trevor's was literally on it's way to a shop to make the rattle stop when it went boom. The start up rattle is the 'something much worse', it just hasn't gone boom yet. Please folks, have your trusted tech listen to your rattle if you're not sure. If it sounds like a can full of nuts and bolts being shook, you are OK. If it sounds like just one or two nuts or bolts being shook around, that's the noise the tech needs to hear.
Was it this thread that had the audio clip of the 'bad' rattle? That was the rattle I don't have any more. That's the rattle simmons1 went after and preemptively cured. The '14 tensioner wasn't 100% for me, it has been for others. Luckily there is still 'Old School'. Still the very best motorcycle I have ever ridden.

Reason I won't go to the non-OEM manual cam chain tensioner... Extended Warranty

I get that point. Absolutely.

But ironically, it is that same warranty (YES) that declined replacing my OEM cct.
If I didn't do something about it, I was concerned my bike would "be in the shop" too. :'(

Again, I'm not miffed. I was a little insulted since I have been very loyal to my dealer, Yamaha, and anyone who even asks me about my bike.
I also note that it wasn't mother Yamaha that denied my YES claim. It was some "suit" that has no idea how poorly he was at doing the very job he was hired to do. LOL

I suspect the best chance for my YES warranty to be a good investment is if I have a Tenere that doesn't break!
Thus, the mcct. :)

Agree with you concerning YES. The service department submitted my claim to YES and it was denied. The service manager submitted it to a different YES Tech and he was 100% in support of the claim. They work in the same office.

The only CCT Failures I am aware of are Trevor, Eric and myself. Eric's and mine were identical all the way down to the morning after an oil / filter change. These claims have definitely opened the eyes and ears of Yamaha and YES. I doubt Yamaha or YES would turn down the replacement of the 2012-2013 CCT if these claims were used as reference.

My CCT was scheduled to be replaced, under extended warranty, the following week during a valve adjustment.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for all the work that has gone into the clutch basket discussion on here. One of the very few irritations I have is the vibration at 3200 to 3600 revs, especially when fully loaded for touring when it takes a little lonber to pass through this zone.

I am trying to source the updated parts in the UK / Europe for a sensible price. It looks like you lucky people in the US are paying about half of the cost over here and I am not sure if anyone this side of the pond has found a deal?

At the moment I am tempted to order the parts from the US as even with taxes and shipping it works out better value, but ever hopeful of an alternative. :D

Regards,

Matt

Not really, but I think the cost of UK / Euro pricing is putting a lot of us on this side of the pond from doing it. I did source all the parts I need from 'Procalibre' and price is decent, only thing is that I will ship it to the outlaws for the missus to collect in the summer when she is over there, that's unless I chop the '12 in for a '14........

Thanks for the reply. The cheapest I have found the clutch basket for in the EU in a place in Greece where it is priced at 438 Euro. That is a lot more reasonable than the UK price. I too have been considering whether to swap to a 2014 or 2015 model but I suspect I will modify and keep the one I have.

Regards,

Matt
