I posted in one of the BMW GS vs S10 threads that I have owned many GS and GSA BMWs over the years (about 15 GSs 28 total BMWs 60 ish total MCs) and I was looking forward to comp the bikes. After going well over 200k miles on just the GS model and many more miles on all makes and models of bikes I could not make a true comp between the bikes without putting 2k or so miles on the S10. I put the first mile on it Dec 5th and hit 4990 today. (29 deg in TN today) I have gone off road, around town, hit the dragon hwy 129 alot and ran the slab knoxville to Miami at 85 mph in a day. As I have said in the past nothing rides like a BMW and that still holds true. This is the first bike I can say rides close enough to the GSA to make me happy and kicks it ass in every other area. It corners perfect, great power, stops on a dime (perfect ABS), looks fantastic, O and the idea of never ever being stuck on the side of the road with another DOA final drive priceless. I have owned 6 diff motorcycles in the last 12 months and sold them with out a 2nd thought, (2 of them GSAs) this one is going to 100k. As i think about that many miles on one bike I must note, I will have 3 valve adj, fluid changes, tires and brakes. I love everything about this bike. Thank you Yamaha. ::021::

Glad to hear you're happy with the bike. There are a few guy in this forum who are playing with suspesion mods, so you might be able to close the 'nothing rides like a Beemer' gap as well.

Thank you. You make me look reasonable. I've only done half that many and people think I'm nuts.

I agree with your assessment. Very happy with the bike. I managed to get 5K in the first month, but that was pretty easy to do in warm weather time. In the last 9 weeks you've kicked my ass in the mileage game. Winter and schedule has really dropped me off my pace.

Yup!! Once I get the rear end sprung correctly, there may be a new line......"nothing rides like a Beemer.' After my 8 BMWs I feel confident in saying that!

The other great thing about this bike is we are a head of the curve. Not many people have one. YET Every time I stop for gas someone always feels the need to ask what is that ?. When I would say its a BMW I would alway get that look. You know the 1%er look. Now I say YAMAHA and I feel the love from the common man, like me. Same tough guy look better bike.

I would have to agree with you about the GS vs. Super Tenere comparison. I too have owned several GS's over the years starting with the R100GS and ending with the R1200GS Twin Cam. The BMW's were terrific bikes but very expensive and a bit fragile. C'mon, 6000 mile valve checks? EFI surging that took years for BMW to address.
What makes the Yamaha so impressive is this is a brand new bike and engine for Yamaha and they got it so right.

Congrats and glad to see that you are enjoying your new YAMAHA.
I took delivery of my Super Tenere in August and had been saving up my vacation time. I put 10,000 miles on in 10 weeks and am now at 15,700 miles, what a great bike this is !!!!!!!!! I have owned many bikes and traveled a few miles, just over 500,000 as of last year. The Tenere looks like it has the potential to be one of the best I have ever owned. The short term report is "awesome", can't wait to give a long term report. I am anxiously awaiting spring time and the opportunity to get back out on the road, I have some great trips planned for this year.

Now that is puting on the miles. I love it. I as a rule buy and sell all the time, make a little sometimes or break even. I like never having to pay to own a bike. On this one I know I am going to take a hit because I bought it new. (First time ever). So I accepted this fact and I am going to ride it and not worry about the money. For once in my life I am just going to enjoy and be happy as hell. I have a group betting this love affair will not make it a year, The fact that I have only owned 1 bike for a full 12months I see why they think this. 1 to 3 months is the norm. I am going to win this bet.

My new Super Tenere is the first big ADV/Touring bike I have ever owned. Fact is, I don't have years and years of riding experience and this is only the third motorbike I have ever ridden. I wanted one of the big BMW's for a long time. But after my test ride of the ST, The bike just felt right. I couldn't say there was one specific thing about it that I liked so much, It just seemed to do so many things well.

So glad to read such positive posts about the Yamaha. That makes me feel assured I didn't make the wrong decision. I rode about 100 miles yesterday and another 70 today. The miles just pass by so effortlessly on this big beast. I have had so many people comment on how nice the bike looks. And I sir, say to them "I agree".

I think the only part that worries me about the Super Tenere is the resale value is not as good as on the BMW R1200GS/A.

Good point. So wear it out and don't worry about it. I sold my '04 FJR, picked up 7/03, with 162k on it for $3k. I bought it for $10,400. About 29% of the purchase price. Not bad for a 9 year old bike.

I seriously doubt the S10 will leave my ownership before 100k. (unless I screw up and crash it) Resale value has always been an afterthought for me. I understand your concerns, but availability is always part of the picture too. If Yamaha stocks the S10 in dealerships, our perceived resale value is a bit less. If they choose to continue the PDP method, our resale value is better, since supply is limited.

At least you don't have to convince the next buyer that the FD is not really an issue... :))

I understand your point.
How is it to work on ST10, is it as easy as on FJR? BMW GS and GSA need too much work, there is something that needs to be done, every 6K or so.
I'm just worried about getting S10, because I ride two-up 90% of the time and always 18+ days trips, I know that FJR can handle the weight of camping stuff. I dont know if S10 can carry, three paniers and my wife who is 120LB.

Resale? What's that?

Now, if you want to add this foreign word "resale" to the BMW and, as you indicate, it has a higher one then I say this.....IT NEEDS IT!!! How else are you gonna off set the hours, days, and weeks spent in the service department along with the extra expense of the parts, maintenance and headaches.

Oh, and on a serious note, "resale" needs to be viewed as a percentage number. The cost of admission is a hell of a lot less on our Tenere than the BMW so it is only an apples to apples comparison when viewd as a percentage of cost new to used.

"Resale"???? Ah, yes, the first thing the BMW sales brochures talk about. I see no reference to this "resale" anywhere in my Yamaha literature.

Easy? It'll take you more time to get the parts and throw away your trash than it will to service it.

Every 4,000 miles = oil
Every 8,000 miles = oil filter
Every 26,000 miles = valve adjustment

As for weight carrying... you have 461 lbs of carrying capacity (459 lbs if in California).

It says you get 482 lbs on an R1200GS Adventure.
