Trip planning part 2:
Devil’s Tower to Cody, WY

Cody to Idaho Falls via Yellowstone

Idaho Falls to Wendover, UT via the Golden Spike historical site and the Transcontinental Railroad Backcountry Byway

Wendover to Tooele via the Pony Express Trail National Backcountry Byway.

Total for first half of the trip: 8 days, 10 states, 2470-ish miles.

I did a similar ride in 07. I would not worry about the heat. As long as you are hydrated you will be fine. I do suggest wearing a good jacket with venting. I will warn you that Yellowstone can get freezing at anytime. And you might decide to stay longer than expected. Great rooms overlooking the Yellowstone River in the town right outside the North gate. The Badlands is pretty cool. One thing strange about the badlands is one side of the road is desolate desert and the other side is green flatlands. Needles Highway was really fun though. Great trip you have planned.

I really don’t think heat will be an issue except for maybe the first day. I plan to make it from here to SD in 2 days, which will make for a couple long days on the highway, but will give me time to play around later on.

So my next question is, how do I get home? I originally planned to ride east through SLC and then go north to south through CO, and then cut through northern NM and head home. Should I skip northern CO and ride south through UT and then east into CO? If so, where?

If you can take in hwy 12 from Torrey to Escalate Utah. It is spectacular on a bike.

AZ666/US 191 from Crescent Junction Utah to I10. There is a couple hundred mile section where it is posted NO Help at night and weekends. I think I saw 5 vehicles on it. Posted 25-45 Mph but no cops!

If I was going to go thru Colorado, time permitting I would go thru Fruita, CO, ride thru Colorado National Monument, take Hwy 50 to Hwy 149, Hwy 149 thru Lake City to Hwy 160 @ South Fork. Hwy 160 to Walsenburg or cut off on Hwy 12 to Trinidad. I-25 south to Raton, NM then 87 toward Clayton headed to TX. If I wanted to go thru NM then at Montrose take 550 south to Durango, Hwy 160 to Pagosa Springs, drop down to Tierra Amarilla, then toward Taos/Red River/Angel Fire area. From there to Santa Rosa to TX. These are paved roads, not enough dirt riding to comment on that.

That’s some nice roads, great scenery. Take a dip in a hot spring if you have time in co.
