I’m looking into crash bars for my new S10. It’s easy to get info and opinions on many of the brands/models out there, but what I can’t find is which ones allow or don’t allow access to various engine parts without taking the bars off.

The bars I’m looking at currently are;
  • OEM
  • Alt rider
  • SW-Motech
  • R&G Adventure
  • Givi TN355
  • Touratech
Can you let me know if you have any of these and if they restrict you from dismantling the side covers, oil filter or any other regular maintenance area without removing the bars?

Appreciate the advice, thanks

I have the Alt Rider
You can remove both side covers. The right hand side is very easy. The left hand side takes a little more effort.
The one major disadvantage is you cannot remove the battery. You have access to the battery and all of the wiring however there is not enough space to get the battery out (or at least I could not find a way).

Givi bars allow access to both side covers and battery, unless you do this....

they do bend quite easily and I had to remove them to straighten things back enough to get the covers off. No damage to the bike, so they did do the job, just not very strong. The bars do need to be removed to set the valves.

Go for some that are stainless as much stronger.

These are Mastech. I like them because they're compact, but seem sturdy enough not to bend in on a fall. And, they allow battery access.

I've done the valve adjustment without removing the bars themselves, just the cross bar at the front of the engine.

As a tip, look for one that has the chassis anchors attached by a flat iron. The worst fall is to the left, there is the fan, the cooler and the anchor of the cooler to the bar. In a fall, the flat iron, better distribute the blow between the two anchors. I've seen falls where the bar withstood the blow, but the chassis anchor is bent, and the same bar broke the cooler's anchor

Have the AltRider bars, and they have protected my bike in a bunch of "offs" in the dirt, and one on-road slow speed off camber, brain dead u-turn. No damage to the bike in any of them.

Battery can be changed without taking the bars off, or even loosening them.

I have had the Givis for years no issues. Sometimes I prefer things that bend. They are absorbing impact rather than transferring it to something more breaky.

Of course, something that absorbs the impact is always better than something that transmits it to another place. That's why I said the individual anchoring of the crash bar in each anchor of the chassis. The crash bar, it didn't bend, the anchor did, and the same bar broke the cooler's bottom anchor
But it is probably the only case. A rigth hit, in the right place ....Knock out

I've been able to change my battery a couple times with the AltRider.

AltRider crash bars on my S10 as well and as mentioned by Don in Lodi and HeliMark the battery can most definitely be removed and installed
it just requires a bit of maneuvering the battery to-and-fro.

Hi Slim,
I've got SW Motech crash bars on my 2018 Es Tenere. I can access the right hand side, that is the battery fuse panels etc without removing the r.h. bars.
To access the left hand side to the cooling fan etc. you must remove the L.H. bars.
The diameter of the bars is 27 mm or something like 1 1/16 inches. I'm not an off road rider, but just need protection from damage in case of a tip over, and I've had two tips onto each side. The bars did the job and paid for themselves. No issue with oil changes filter included.
While you are at it, install some LED lights onto the crash bars for extra safety.
The Tenere's stock lights are crap, as they are only halogen I believe.
Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention, I can remove the battery without removing the r.h. SW Motech crash bar.
