What to look for in a used Tenere?

I'm looking at 2012 Tenere with only 2700 miles on it. The dealer has had it for 2 years and I'm just wondering why they would have it that long. Is there anything I should look for? All the pictures look really good.

Thanks,
Shayn

What is the price ? Only reason they should still have it is if they are asking too much

I wouldn't think a PO could do much damage in 2700 miles. Give it a good once-over and be prepared to change all the fluids if the deal works out. Regardless of mileage, remember the bike is only worth what someone will pay for it. In the case of a [box stock] '12, you're looking at mid $5k at best.

Does it have luggage, crash bars, tank bag ? In 2016 I bought my first Tenere it was a used 2013 with 8,000 miles and looked like new, it had Yamaha panniers and top box, crash bars and skid plate, very expensive tank bag , yamaha wind deflectors, paid $8,000 and was happy. After 50,000 miles I traded for a brandnew 2018 just to get cruise control.

2012 So it’s aging and missing the improvements done to the Gen 2 moto.
Gen 2 models 2014-2015 with 30k to mid mileage are selling for $6.8k-$8.5k range with farkles.
Might be worth $5500-6k, sounds like the dealer is trying to make up for trade in value lost.

I was in the same situation. Local Super Tenere, 2800 miles, 2012, Went and seen I and fell in love with the bike. Even made a reasonable offer.

That got me looking around and I found a left over 16es for not much more. I am really happy the guy didn’t take my offer.

If you are patient, you can have a gen 2 and the subtle improvements are worth the search.

Improved cam chain tensioner, cruise control, adjustable windshield, led turn signals, heated grips, and the es suspension is excellent. Especially if riding two up.

Look around, be patient, and one will come up.

They're asking $7800. That's too much even with only 2700 miles?
The bike isn't even broken in, but at that age, I would be worried about all the rubber bits on it from sitting around. If they are original, they all need replacing. The difference, of getting the bike to where it needs to be, and a good used Gen 2, may be negligible. These bikes will easily go 200K miles with normal maintenance, so don't get scared with ones that have 30K miles on them.

what rubber bits are you referring to ? With 50,000 miles on my previous 2013 Tenere the only rubber that was ever replaced was tires and that was simply because they wore out.
Like most folks I will also recommend looking for a generation two 2014 or newer, they have a bunch of minor but very nice improvements for not much more money.

Tires, if they are original, even with that mileage, I would change them. Check all the hoses, some don't age well with no use.

There was a dealer near me selling brand new left-over 2013's with zero miles for $9800 in 2014. Look at cycletrader for what 12's are going for.

Also, back in 2008 or so, a local dealer had a used 2005 V Strom with 9k mi on their floor. It was there over a year. I think they had $8500 on the hang tag. I commented that the bike was having an anniversary of sitting there, and asked the sales guy what they'd sell it for.
"$5400".

Not haggling and that's the price we arrived at. That's the first number he spit out. I said, "sold". I told him if the tag was lower, I'd have bought it a year ago.

Hello all, newbie here! I’m coming from the Sport-Touring world of Beemers for the last 27yrs. For several years now,
I‘ve been lurking around ADV rider world/ Duo sport bikes with keen interest. Now, due to recent neck issues (surgeries)
I really need a more up right position. I’ve only sat on a 2012 s10 and fit real well!! I have rode KTM’s, GS 1200, GS 800
but as I said, the Tenere seemed to feel good. Sorry for the ramble but, there is now a 2012 with 12,000+miles locall.
They want $7,999 and it’s bone stock. That seems high?? Any thoughts ? I will likely be trading my 98’ K1200RS
in on what ever Tenere’ within reason I find. Thanks for reading!

I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide.
$8000 is not priced well. They are in the $6000 range with low miles (20,000 or so) on cycletrader right now for a gen1. That's at dealers, not private sales. There are Gen II's in the 9 to $10,000 with low miles from dealers as well.

when you say bone stock does that mean no luggage ? If there is no luggage system included my opinion the price is way to high. Maybe your not interested in any type of luggage system ? I still think the price is to high.
