It didn't take long for this simple "show and tell" thread to go off the rails, some members absolutely triggered (pun intended).

The purpose of this thread was simply stated, show and tell what you may own and perhaps an anecdote about it. Leave the politics and debates out of it. Is it that hard to understand and that difficult to follow? If it is, the first and most obvious question is why are you in this thread?? Why is the mere fact that this thread exists so upsetting?

There are a few threads within The Lounge, including multiple reasonable topics within the Random Rant Thread that I either have no interest in at best or perhaps disagree with in a worst case scenario. As a mature adult, I choose to skim over those topics and not participate. Strongly requesting they be taken down or somehow hidden away so I cannot find them never enters my mind.

Yay, a thread discusses itself. Personally, I'm not a fan of any off-topic threads that require a large qualification in order to manage posts, unless the topic of relevance to all members (such as the ever growing COVID thread). I'm here for S10 camaraderie, learn something, and contribute. Hopefully make some friends online and in-person. I'm a gun owner with multiple firearms but feel zero need to discuss that on this forum. I only mention this as there will be an implicit assumption that if I'm not a fan of this thread that I'm not a gun owner or otherwise against owning firearms in the U.S. This is an international forum and the topic at hand is generally very U.S.-centric, carrying all the opinions and world views that can come with that. It is political at its base existence. The fact that a member can't ask a simple question without it being edited out points to the problem. I think the presence of this thread and its inherently exclusionary tone doesn't serve the larger S10 community we're all a part of. If the gun talk is more important than having an inclusive S10 forum, that is a choice, but it's not about motorcycles or the Super Tenere. I would like to suggest another topic - sharing our pictures eating and experiences with herring. Or the proper way to cook bratwurst. No controversies there. I don't even care if a vegetarian asks a question. :D

Some people and guns have a hair trigger. Talking about integrity, and then personal attacks. Bang, Bang, Bang.

So in keeping this thread on topic, here’s a shotgun that’s a favorite. Browning Citori. 587AEC85-AFE3-4E33-B877-B226AF22201B.jpeg

:D Are we related? We used to live in Temperance, and my dad's side is from Wyandotte. And, apparently we think alike.

My Colt M-4 was manufactured back when the Brady Bill was in effect. "For Law Enforcement & Military Use Only" is stamped into the lower. No longer in effect, but shows it's age. With the help of the chrome lined barrel, it's still groups like new.
Back in the 80's, LAPD use to have a store at their academy that also sold guns for a good price. Had to be law enforcement to buy. Still have a Colt CAR-15 I bought from them for $400. It is an A1 version, that I had to send to the factory to have warranty work done to it. It came back with a new chrome barrel.

While the polling is running 2:1 to keep the thread, I'm also getting PMs like this:

"
. . . I would encourage you to drop the firearms thread. While I am a firm believer in the whole Bill of Rights I do know that 2nd Amendment discussions in particular can become emotional very quickly. (Ever hear of someone throwing down over the reserve clause? *L*) An emotional disagreement on the topic can escalate into hard feelings that may bleed over into other parts of the Forum. It would be sad to see members fall out or off over a thread that is not even on topic for the Forum in general.
Again thank you for the fine forum
"

Just a heads up that I'm about to put my thumb on the scale and kill the thread because (1) emails like this are right, in we are not going to let the forum have friction due to this experiment and (2) keeping tabs on this one thread takes more of my time than anything else here. I actually have a life too.

So far - just sayin'

Just my 2 cents worth. I think people need to consider that America as the 52 States is still relatively young as a nation or country call it what you will. You dont have to go back many generations and there were no big cities as such. People lived a rural and quite remote life. Hunting was a way of life for most people. If your hundreds of miles in the middle of nowhere you are in effect your own Law Enforcement Officer. I hope in future generations may be things will change and their will be less reliance on being your own L.E.O. and the need for Guns will be less. But considering the sheer size of America there is still going to be lots of hunting and recreational use. Anyway been an interesting thread for me.

I don’t get it Bob? You made it crystal clear in the subject line. Simple enough for a child to comprehend. It’s in the off topic part of the forum.

Why can we not enjoy pictures of proud ownership of someone’s property? I also am of the opinion that anyone who starts spewing political nonsense or childish personal attacks just be removed from commenting.

I really enjoy off topic parts of forums like this. It shows the vast differences in the people who also share a particular passion.

Anyway, I'm off to start the "Show Your Quilt" thread soon. That couldn't possibly get too many people upset, I hope.
