I'm likely to mod the rear panels of my OEM panniers to take bottle holders. Will probably go the Zega Pro accessories route. Using the base plate adapters in order to fit different functional systems. It will mean drilling through the boxes. Has anyone implemented a mod of this type yet on the OEM gear?

I've always carried extra fuel on long trips, especially thru Mexico when, in the day, it was 300 miles between stations. I refit the auxiliary 3 ltr side can off my old Honda Trail 90, and mounted it opposite the exhaust on my Honda Transalp. That was 76,000 miles ago and it still serves me well.

Instead of drilling, have you tried 3-M Dual Lock. This is an industrial Velcro. I've used it to mount shovels and brackets on my snowmobile, instead of drilling holes.
I hold my helmet camera on my helmet. You have to use a pliers to get it off.

These things are sort of a legend on advrider and I've mounted them all sorts of places. By coincidence, they are exactly the right diameter to hold a typical 33oz fuel bottle. Because they have a cap with a rubber seal and are waterproof, you can put things in them besides fuel. And you can't beat the $5 price.

There is actually an even larger version of that tube in existence. This guy sells it: http://www.thetooltube.com/MegaTube.html

I don't know where he sources it from though. He's reselling the $5 agri tube for $17, and the Mega Tube is $20.

I made these BIG 40 oz. water bottle holders to put on the engine gaurds on our up coming Alaska trip. They look a little home made but should do the job.
