Vibration eliminating phone mount?

I was reading either on this forum or on a Facebook group, about the vibration in motorcycles being bad for the cameras in the iPhones and maybe other smart phones that have image stabilizers. And this week my camera started to shake when it was completely still, after my 1,300 mile trip where in was mounted on a RAM mount on my handlebars. I use the GPS on my phone for navigation on my trips so I’d like to be able to see it. Other than a tank bag, do you guys know of any ways to mount a cell phone without giving it a whole bunch of extra vibration?

Hondo garage makes one but its very expensive. Its also well made for sure.

I just use an old phone. It has all my mapping data and music. I can wifi tether from my main phone if i need live data. Its great. I can kill the OIS and it wont matter.

Quadlock have finally announced their anti vibration mount, pre-order now for delivery next week. In the UK it's £15.95, mount and phone case is extra.

I had the same problem with my iPhone Max Pro last year after 1200 mile trip on my previous FZ8 using a Quadlock case. Got a new Phone, phone holder and bike. Same problem after 6 month. Before I went on another 1100 mile trip this year, I got the Hondo mount and combined it with the quad lock wireless charger. It seemed to work. Here are some pics

I use the Ram X-Grip mounted to my handlebars. The Ram balls and the rubber grips seem to soak up most of the vibrations.

Anything that hard mounts is not good for phones.

I have had a friend just killed her 3rd iPhone - it's hard mounded to the bars.

I have a ram mount X grip that uses their balls mounted to my handlebars, that is what killed my phone...

What about mounting it above and in front of the gas tank filler cap? There may be less vibration present there (quick check with a bare hand at various speeds would be easy to do).

RAM makes this whole setup but you could just buy the tank ring mount, whatever size extension arm is appropriate and the phone mount of your choice that has a RAM ball fitted to the back.

The ram mounts kill phones. Its why i will never use them, despite the fact that they are awesome (except for this flaw).

That is why i just use an old phone. Its worth nothing and if the camera dies, who cares?

How does it kill phones?
They transmit too much vibration from the bike to the phone, because they have no vibration isolation/damping.

Here is what happens: the camera in your phone has something called an ois. Optical image stabilizer. Its a tiny gagdet that focuses your camera lens and eliminated the shake of your hands.

Anytime your phone is on, its working. Even if the camera is off. So, if you keep your phone on and mounted to a bike, now you are shaking this anti shake mechanism a few thousand cycles per second.

That works the ois harder in minutes than it would work in a year of being in your pocket.

When the ois dies, you lose your cameras ability to focus. At this point, many consider their phone “dead” because its a dealbreaker to pay $1300 for a camera with a phone inside (iphone) and lose the camera.

So: either use an old phone and let it kill your camera, or play this game if buying endless accessories in hopes of defying physics.

I just use my last phone. My main phone is my iphone x, and my se is now the bike phone. In a fee years ill upgrade and the x will move to the bike, rinse repeat every 3-4 years.

Can confirm the phone killer vibration. Changed 1 camera module and focus chip on my XS, seems like all new phones with advanced ois are affected. For now using my old iPhone 7S with OsmAnd or Scenic as GPS and the XS stays in the pocket. Looking for a suitable holder as having 2 devices is a paint (not to mention charging, notifications etc on the long runs). That Hondo Buzz-Kill actually looks pretty good so will give it a try, thanks @lemmifun ; just need to find a way to mount it on the top bar above the dash as I'm tired of looking at the handlebar.

When on my bike I have my phone put away as far as possible. I don't want any messages or phonecalls disturbing me. When navigating i use a TomTom.
I really love the quiet moments on the bike, all day of riding without any distractions.

I installed it on the upper bar next to my Garmin Zumo XT and took it for spin. It was flopping to much around and I put it back on the handle bar. The position on the upper bar is great for a fixed mount like the zumo gps if you have additional windscreen stabilizer. I use the phone only for Waze warninga.

Thanks, I'll have to try it out to see what fits. Thinking also about retrofitting an old iPad mini2 for OsmAnd and/or Waze.
Not going for a dedicated gps with so many devices around the house

I've been running a 5" double socket ram mount on my handlebars for 7 years. Had a iphone 6 in it for 50k miles of ruff roads. Never had a problem with my iphone. I put all my iphones in lifeproof cases.

Yes, not an issue for older models. Just the new phones get effed up
