Valve adjustment - more lessons learned

I've got 109,000 on a 2014 model (bought in 2016) without having the valves checked yet. I probably will do so soon. My 432,000 mile V-Strom got its valves checked every 100k. Like Paul says, the bikes are tools, used every day and take a beating. That's why I bought the Tenere.

Can you guys double check my math here?
Just checked the valves at 26k and they are all off a little. I know most guys have. It had a problem I just must be lucky I guess

Here are the measurements, the existing shims and what we calculated as the new shims. The intake shims from cylinder two can get moved to cylinder one so I don’t have to buy those. This should reset me back to the safe adjust me range, I believe. Can you guys make sure I have this right?

All your factory shims were whole numbers? Usually you can find some off sizes in there. Or is your spreadsheet rounding off the numbers? If so format your cells to display two decimal points.

The shims are labeled eg 195 is actually 1.95 mm thick, and in increments of .05 mm.
So there is no shim 194, 192, 209, etc. but may have worn a bit or more likely just an error in measuring the thickness.
No worries, installing the new shims as listed should still get all the clearances within spec.

The “shim” rows are the ones that were in the bike, they came in in-between sizes like 192. The “new shim” rows are the ones I am going to by and only come in increments of .05 mm as stated above.

Thanks for taking a look, I figured it was correct but alwaysgood to make sure you don’t go the wrong way.

Also didn’t realize shims were like 6 bucks a piece.

Thanks!
Mike

What I meant to highlight is I have read factory installed shims are often in sizes not available from Yamaha in parts fiche. i.e. 1.925, 1.975, etc. So curious if his factory installed really had none.

I stand corrected, I didn't know the factory supplied shims were different than what is available through parts supply.
I've checked my valve clearances twice, at 40k and 80k and haven't yet had to change any shims.

Yeah for the ones in the bike they are actually marked, I did. It measure them since I could. It find my digital caliper

I’ll set them towards the high end and next time hopefully don’t have to change anything

Question for those who have had to adjust their valves. Do you notice a difference after the adjustment? If so, then what? Thank You in advance!
It’s not as much as a performance difference, although if your valves are tight after the service you might notice more power and easier starting since all valves are fully closed during combustion. The main concern is ,with valves that are tight and don’t seat all the way it might damage the valve seats by combustion blow by. When I say “tight valves” I mean there is a small gap between top of the valve stem and cam lobe to allow for hot metal expansion also valve seats tend to “cup out” meaning seating themselves deeper and deeper into the valve seat causing the small gap to get less and less . Hope this helps.

Left row, some of the Yamaha factory installed shim sizes.
Right, a few of the aftermarket size increments available which is also what you get with Yamaha OEM parts.

And hard to say if it runs any better, just the knowledge that the valves are adjusted properly and are up to the task.
A bit smoother idle maybe?B5393428-C8A4-4C6C-979C-25546511B420.jpeg

I had two valves out of spec when I did mine at 21K miles (before a 17k mile trip), one loose and one tight. Never had a loose valve before. The only difference I noticed was that I slept a bit better knowing that I had taken a look at the bike.

Plenty of people say they never check their valves and the bike runs fine. I also know people who never go to the doctor and never wear their seat belt. Just because it works for them doesn't mean that I want to follow their example.

Does someone have the picture of the cam installed showing the correct number of teeth between the two cams? I thought it was like 4.5 links between cams or something like that.

I could have sworn I saw a pic in one of these threads but can’t find it now

Thanks!
