Used bike waranty

Does the factory warranty stay with the bike so if you buy it used and it's still under warranty does it transfer to the new owner? This the case all the time or do you have to do something to transfer it?

Also I think I read where the extended warranty is another 4 yrs for around $400? Can you get that on a used bike as well?

Sorry if these are stupid common sense questions but I've never bought a new or almost new bike and I buy trucks new and never get the extended warranty so I don't have a clue how it works.

The answer is yes. As long as the bike is under factory one year warranty you can buy the bike used and purchase the extended warranty. This is exactly what i did.

The factory warranty is for 1 year and goes with the bike. You CANNOT buy an extended factory warranty no matter what anyone tells you.

You can, however buy an extended service plan such as those sold by Yamaha which is the Y.E.S. plan. It stands for Yamaha Extended Service. There are very real legal differences between a warranty and a service plan. An extended service plan is really just a type of insurance.

So how come you guys in the US only get a one year warranty, it`s two years in the UK ::008:: and service intervals are 6,000 miles and it is I think 4,000 miles in the US ::007::

It's because Euro wide laws all worked together to force manufacturers to extend the warranty periods, most of this was due to block exemption during the late '90's when people were buying right hand drive cars from Belgium, etc and saving thousands of £'s. As for the service intervals this is a long tradition in the US of doing oil changes every 3-4k, hence the only place in the world where you can get 'drive-thru' oil changes. Whereas in the EU we have moved along with the times and adhere to manufactures servicing schedules, for example, my current BM has oil service intervals starting at 31k km, and reduces down depending on type of driving and what the sensors pick up. My father in-law, has his 2013 Volvo oil and filter changed every 3k miles, " 'cos that what I've always done!" Even though it can run to 16k miles between oil changes with the new long life oils. I think it just boils down to what manufactures can get away with to aid their dealerships.
