Upper fairing push pin removal

Does anybody know how to easily remove the push pin fasteners at the front of the upper fairings? I have dealt with some of these in the past. Some you can push the pin through the fastener, some you have to try to get the pin to back out with a razor blade, and some just self destruct no matter what you do. Any advice would be welcome. I have no idea why they would use pins instead of a screw.

Thanks

Push in on the center pin with something small (I use a small allen wrench). The center pin will depress into the outer part of the fastener which will make the fastener go slack for removal. Once you have the whole thing out, you reset it by pulling the center pin out past flush, so that when you re-insert it you push the center pin flush again to make it snug again.

What Steve wrote is perfect. Exactly how you're supposed to do it. [thumb]

As Steve said, use an allen wrench, small screw driver, or whatever is nearby to push the pin in.
I normally use a 4 mm allen wrench because that is what I have in hand when removing the side panels.

Good video on how to use 3 types of push rivets - link

They have a tendency to pop out occasionally though. I had a little left side tip over and later noticed there was an inner panel flopping about inside the lower radiator scoop. I manually pushed it back into place and only later noticed when I took off the left side panels that the two push pins securing that inner panel to the outer faring bit were gone. Luckily I had some spares from my old Honda ST1300 which were an exact fit.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I wasn’t sure what style these are. I like this style as they can usually be reused.

Years ago the first time I dealt with those plastic push pin rivets I used an awl to push in the center pin to release it, that worked fine but on one rivet I pushed a little to hard and the plastic center pin went all the way through and fell out and disappeared, so ever since that day I have been using an old Bic Pen to depress the center pin because it only fits in far enough to release the pin and then it stops.

Can anyone point me to an online source to buy the correct size/type replacement push pins? I've been looking on eBay and while there are some similar sizes, I haven't been able to find any that look the same.
