Took off the top plate (stock)
I can't loosen the rear center screw on the bottom rack. Snapped my 5mm socket. Tried friends impact socket won't budge. Ideas? Thanks!

Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosy?

Spray some penetrating oil in the best you can, from underneath as well as at the head, though I have doubts that much will get in where you need it from the top.

I pull the spacer out the day I get the bike home, so haven't had that piece in since. I don't recall the exact fasteners, just the top plate three bolts that are re-used when re-installing it. Those are 6mm.

Using the impact I tried both directions. This is under the top plate. I need the one thats farthest to the rear from the rider center. All the others were snug but came right out.

Wow. The bigger one all broke loose pretty easy. The bottom two smaller size in the center of bottom rack will not move even with impacts put on it. I will try pb blaster tonight unless someone else has an idea.

This is the bolt I'm trying to remove. I have almost destroyed it and it still wont move. I haven't seen any hold like this before.20190714_101439.jpg

I put that Givi rack on mine. I don’t remember having any issues at all. Good luck

I know. Nobody I have talked to has had issues. People that have seen it can't believe it won't move. Snap on impacts, manual impacts, ratchets, have all failed. Broke 2 hex sockets and a bolt extractor now. It won't come loose. Just drilled completely through it one end to the other won't move. I had it soaking in penetrating oil all night. Did nothing.

It's possibly self welded to the mating threads. This is rare, except on dissimilar materials. If you drill off the head and remove the plastic sub mount, you may be able to grab what's left of the bolt with vise grips and soak the now exposed threads with more penetrating oil and get it loose.

Worst case, you drill larger and larger holes until you can either pick the pieces out of the hole or re-tap the threads.

It's not uncommon to drill the head off and then discover that w/o tension, the remaining bolt comes right out.

Does the Givi rack replace that reinforcement bar with something?
Just fyi, neither one of the reinforcement bar screws will come loose under normal excessive force on the plate I just dug out of my bin. If you have an impact hammer drill, going at the screw from the back side might drive it out. Don't need reverse bits from the back.

Wow. The drill from the backside is all I've got. That allen socket on the screw is really shallow, not a lot of room for abuse. Don't run the drill long enough to heat things up too much.

It sounds like they sell alot of these. How do others get the factory screw out that is in the hole by number 9 ??

Haven't drilled the head off yet. Drank the beers instead. Had to work today. It has a hole completely thru it.
