Last night I couldn't access the setting mode display once the fuel got low and display switched to the TRIP-F readout. Has anyone noticed this before? Once I filled up it was back to normal. Not sure if it was a fluke or not, the owner's manual doesn't mention it.

Bizarre that Yamaha would think that's a good idea.
Well Yama isn't the only maker to do that. Rode a couple Gen 2 Connies and they did the same. Once low fuel came on you couldn't see anything else. A fellow member figured out a plug in piece to eliminate that warning. Then you had to watch your mileage as there would be no other indicator to prompt you to refuel. I liked it!

I think there are a couple of things you can do. Like Bokerfork says, you can scroll to another screen and see if it works then. It will not erase the low fuel screen so you can scroll back to it afterwards. Also, sometimes when my bike is near reserve, if it is on the side stand for a while, it will trigger the low fuel screen when it is turned back on, even though after riding it a bit, the second fuel bar comes back on. I just go to the reserve screen and reset it, which deletes it for the time being. When it gets to reserve while riding, it will come back on again. I suppose you could reset the reserve screen if scrolling to a different screen doesn't work, but in this case you will have to keep track of how many miles you have left, because it will not come on again.

Actually, I prefer 10W40 dino oil over the synthetic stuff. YMMV.

It seems to me that once your screen goes blank a quick rock on the selector switch brings back the original screen. At least it does on my Gen 2
My 2014 works like this also.

Once it starts counting up the miles when fuel is low, I can still toggle through all the original screens with the selector switch.

I can scroll through the three screens, I just can't access the selection menu to change settings.
