My time in the Picos has come to an end. But what a good time in was!

Just as a bit of background, I’ve been doing European trips since the mid 80s, every year and sometimes multiple times a year. I’ve been to Scotland numerous time and Wales countless times. My European bike trips have taken me as far east as Hungary, south as Croatia and Spain and almost everything in between. The Alps, Dolomites, Pyrenees etc I’ve done numerous times and enjoyed them all, immensely. My point is not, ooh look what I’ve done, just that I have lots to compare the Picos and Asturias against.

I had been to the Picos in the early 2000s, but just travelled through, didn’t explore. Did lots on this trip and must say, what an absolutely fantastic region! The scenery is stunning, the roads are excellent biking entertainment, with a mix of proper nadgery passes and mid to fast flowing sweepers, most of which are well surfaced and traffic free. I have to emphasise just how little traffic there is! Although we had good weather, in reality it was too hot and became uncomfortable and energy zapping after a few hours. There’s plenty to see to keep you busy for a week to ten days. Up at the top of the cable car we saw vultures and golden eagles, with loads of kites and other raptors throughout the region. IMO and experience, the Picos is a must do for the bike enthusiast, it’s now top of my list of biking regions. The N621/625/AS114 loop is especially good. If you haven’t been……….maybe.

I’m now in the Pyrenees and surrounding areas for another week, but it’s still ridiculously hot.

Pics to follow once I’ve sorted my camera photos, I have a few phone ones ready to go later today.
