Just got the Top Box... IT is the newer version. The lip around the box is one piece, in the older versions, the corners were plastic.

Also, my side cases had a metal plate for the Trax logo, on the newer top box the Trax logo is indented in the metal. That drives me crazy as I want to choose to advertise for a company and not forced to. I was able to take the metal plate off the side cases w/hair dryer. I was also hoping to put some rear-facing reflective decals on the top box but the indented logo would make it look bad.

I ordered the base plate as well that attaches to a rack and then you attach the top box to that. Well, the attachment points on the base plate consist of a countersunk screw/attachment/lock nut. The lock nut fits into a hex shaped area in the base plate that you would think would keep it from spinning as you tighten the 4 connection points... Well, you barely get the lock nut on the screw before it spins in that plastic area - I had to jam a flat-head screw driver in there to keep it from spinning.

One other issue - I ordered the 3 lock set, (6 locks), they fit fine on the side cases but for the top box I had to take the locking tab of the lock apart and flip it as it wouldn't catch and lock.

The luggage itself is fine and I'm sure regardless of which one you get, you'll be happy. I don't think the function of the different versions matter, maybe just more of a cosmetic thing as the new stuff just 'looks' tighter if that makes sense.
