What size is the hole that tire stems fit through ? Want to try and find
metal valve stem that fits correctly ?

5. Whatever you do stay away from the patchboy stems with the two nuts on the inside. I don't care what they say on the GL1800 board, they are junk. Make sure the nut is on the outside where you can get to it.

I have the ShowChrome TPMS system that just screws to the top of each valve stem. I find it works very well. Just have the little key fob that has all of the info on it. doesn't even affect the balance of the tire. I have had this system on two different bikes and will use it on a third when I get the next one. I have had them all caked with mud, crossed low water crossing including creeks, It never misses a beat and has saved my bacon once with a low tire.

TPMS tire valves with steel stem

Hi
My first post on here. I need to know if it's possible to change the tyre valves for steel ones? The reason being I want to fit Garmin pressure caps and you shouldn't fit them to rubber stemmed valves. If this isn't possible has anyone fitted any other system? It's a real must for me as Just recently I suffered a high speed rear tyre blow out on the motorway. It was on a goldwing which I managed to stay on and get stopped but it was a real brown trouser moment.

Absolutely. I fitted my wheels with 45 degree metal stems and have a small and light pressure sensor fitted to each one. I had straight metal stems but learned the hard way that most gas station air pump heads can't be maneuvered in such a way to fill the tire. The 45 degree ones have no problem with any air pump head. This is the system I have although I removed the display from that cheesy handlebar mount then mounted the display in my infill panel for a much cleaner look:

I have the same TPMS as Ron and I've used rubber valve stems and never had any issues. Currently have 18,000 miles on original stems no issue, unsure about age of my 2012 stems but I had the system on it for 10,000 miles. Did I dodge a bullet or is requiring metal stems a unnecessary requirement to cover the TPMS manufacturers butt?

That's a good idea. I've been thinking about putting some kind of TPMS on my tenere. We have sharp rocks out here.

My 2012 wing has factory TPMS and I also run a run-flat car tire on the rear.

I just bought the Steel Mate TP-90 TPMS from Amazon yesterday. I got them today. You gotta love Prime with free next day shipping. The sensors are 9.6 grams...no need for steel stems or balancing. Looks like a decent set up.

I wouldn't mount them on rubber stems. And I'm pretty sure that the instructions indicate the same but of course your mileage may vary and all that.

Not sure if you're replying to me or the OP, but my instructions don't indicate replacing the valve stems unlike the Garmin instructions that do say to install only on steel stems. I'm going to try mine on rubber to see if i like them and probably change the stems out to steel. Probably should have done it last week when I put on new tires. I saw some Garmin reviews with installs on rubber stems and no problems. Garmin is probably doing the ole CYA thing. Couldn't find a weight but both brands look the same.

Re: valves with steel stem

Interesting. This system is sold under a few different brand names. My instructions definitely indicate steel only. Doing a bit of quick back of the envelope calculation shows that outward acceleration at say 70mph would be around 21 newtons, or in other words the 10g sensor will require a force of around 210 grams to hold it in position. Not a lot but a steel valve stem is better equipped to handle that, especially if the rubber stem sees any deflection at all due to rotation.

Bought my bike used with a steel T stem on the rear. You can then add/remove air without removing the TPMS sensor. I have the other one for the front, waiting for the next tire change. Not sure what brand.

I installed mine in the infill panel with a grommeted hole for the wire to pass through for power. About as OEM as I could make it look.

Got the Doran 360M and they not only require metal valve stem but supply them with the unit.

That's a really great price on the steelmate, I think I paid over $200 when I bought mine a couple years ago.
