Yes my 2012 with 140,000km needs a top end rebuild, I’ve been quoted $2000usd and I’m hoping someone out there has a complete engine I can swap out. Found one on eBay for $2495usd, $250 shipping to Buffalo then I have to deal with duties.
Cheers Paul.

I'm just interested in the details of why it would need rebuilt so soon.
140,000 KM doesn't sound like much. I have over 275,000 km on mine and it feels like new.
How often do you change oil? what kind of air filter do you run?
I'm an oil changer I'll admit. Don't like my oil to even look dirty. Not one speck of dust has ever gone through my air filter, Stock filter only.
Hope you get it worked out. I picked up a 12 Tenere that runs perfect for $200. For spare parts if I need.

Steve

Thanks Steve.
I did notice some small specks of dust when I changed the filter a few days ago and for oil I have always used Asoil and change it around 8,000km. I do ride it off road and gravel a lot and being the slow guy I’m usually following in the dust cloud. Ya I’m disappointed as I know there are a lot of S10 out there with over 100.000 miles. Just got back from Arizona and that’s when I noticed the oil consumption and the bike would top out at 101mph. And I use stock air filters.

You are still doing Romney I hope.

I spent a lot of money on a sort-of-truck and a toy hauler. I need free scotch!

And I have broken bread with Patrick since I last saw you. I need to clear my throat.

Oil consumption could also be caused by sticky rings due to carbon build up. Was thinking flushing with Seafoam mixed with oil prior to oil change and mixing with fuel for the intake valves.

if it makes you feel better mine was done at 80k km. Parts were about $350 (2nd gen pistons, rings, all gaskets, valve seals) Labor was free. Don't need much in the way of tools, just a spring compressor.
The cylinder rings were a TPITB to put back on, even with two sets of hands.

everything you need is here:
https://thetenerist.wordpress.com/2017/03/04/yamaha-super-tenere-xt-1200-top-end-rebuild/

readers digest version: Valve seals and piston rings gone!
I don't putter, but I maintain my bikes.
Granted, once all the carbon was cleaned off, the pistons had barely any wear. I could have re-used them, re ring and away you go, but decided to go for the better 2nd gen piston. Had the head honed. Bike ran like a dream once rebuilt.

If you need anything, pm, or email/call.

Greg

If you haev an independent shop you trust, that $350 plus some labor would be a great deal. I'd prefer doing that before trusting the rest of an engine and trans out of a salvage.

exactly. The motor is not that bad to get out. The website I deal with had great pricing to boot. That way, you know exactly where you're at. With an ebay motor...who the hell knows, plus you have to deal with the cross border BS.

BTW...don't go in/out the same day. I got pegged at the border when I picked up my shock.

Top end is easy to rebuild. Unless you know 100% there is mechanical damage, I would be willing to bet that you might have a carbon build up issue. It might even be so bad you might need to clean the top of the pistons and clean the valves and seats. But possibly no new parts. Very rarely do these motors need new 'hard parts'.
Just $.02 from my vast Tenere experience:)

Thanks guys I’ll go with your advice and go with the rebuild. Jaxon do you have a rough idea how many hrs for the shop to remove and rebuild the motor?

Thanks again guys.

Are you replacing valves, guides, springs, keepers. I would suggest you 'lap' the valves into the seats. If you do things like this it does add time. Depending on how deep you get into it I'm going to take a guess at 20-30 hours. ( just depends on the parts to be replaced) I could do it quicker but I'm very particular and often take more time than needed to check, double check and do all the small 'jobs' to make sure everything is 100%.

How often and for how long have you "topped out" over 100 mph in the 140km you've driven the bike?
