Very impressive, nice mounting system, carrying handle, and looks good, too. I am thinking about going with a small case on each side to keep the bike as narrow as possible.

Lock Stock and Barrel, or how to convert a Case lock to your ignition Key.






So how did SupeeMoose our Unbreakable Hero cracked this Lock?

Well actually he needed a little help from "de XT Dokter" :)


First we need to get the lock out of the case, thats a simple 2 screw job.


Then we need to remove te Cylinder, no hassle with a pushpin into a dark hole, or two security allanbolts, no just take of a circlip, and remove the big and sturdy plastic Lockrocker, no bending possible here

It wil give a lockpuller quite a hard job, because of the spring nature of the construction, whereas the BMW locks who are just secured with one of the bronze keyplates, are all to easily removed :-(
(Sorry for this thread pollution just some itching BMW touringcase scarring comming up?)

Another very positive sight is the enormous ball and spring positionholder, that would be the first revision needed in the Yamaha cases imho...




Okay, now we can take out the cylinder



As you can see the two keybeards are quite different, so thats our job for today, get the keyplates to recognise the S10 key

Original Key in its cylinder, all plates nicely flush, and lock turns smoothly :)





SuperMoose our lowkey hero looking quite out of his depth...



So he called me to the rescue, to get the plates synchronised..

He told me, he had heard you could easily file them flush, but could not handle such a big file.
(what a wimpy SuperHero err...)



But anyone knowing the ErnsTT the old grumpy perfectionist, will see the terror in huis eyes at that thought, because you don't cut original wiring looms or file locks !

So the Dutch approuch is first take everithing apart
(got a box full of demolished Matchbox... :-()

How do you take a cilinder apart?



As you can see the keyplates are easily taken out, but there is a *very* small spring under it !




TADAAA...



Oh oooo, theres a whole lot of them little flea like jumpers, init?




Okay now we are getting somewhere, ride a pen around the Keybeard and match the plates around, for a crude match of things...

Yes Yes, i know, but have you looked at the yamaha key?
Its way to long for caselocks, and the longer the key the greater the torque on its shaft that can be generated, several people allready teared the beard of the key completely with the standard cases.

And prevention is allways better then repairing, so it looks crude, but wait, its all part of the plan...




Ever wondered why the call those fingerpiercicg little files Keyfiles? Here's your answer :--)

The lock resceptable is way to short, so i had to make room for the complete Keybeard so the broadside of the key would take the load of turning the lock instead of the anorexic beard which can tearof at minimal loads.




TADAA, Room to move !

As you can imagine it needs some good motoric sjillz to accomplish this, so if your not experienced, first try it on a sparelock (they are relatively cheap) because you *can* file away material, but alas you *can't* file onto...

Important allways use the master key when tooling at locks, allready used key's wear, so if you match your lock on an old key, and loose it, there's a big chance the lock wont budge with the new made key's !

Welll here they are the little dwarfs how keep the lock shut when a wrong key is entered, look at the protruding spring catch, it pulls the plate back against the hills and dales of the keybeard.

Whats to measure now, imagine the key in its lok and look where the beard runs in the hole, there you measure it up. remebering the spring pushes the plat e wee bit skewed.




As you can see, with a little stooldance as we call int in dutch, i only needed to grind down just one (nr. four) of the plates, keeping the rest of the plates as long as possible to have maximum lock strenght against "Scew(driver) you" petty people.




Nice and flush, without rush.

Yes you need quite some patience to make room for the humangous long key...


All finished up nicely, but your documentary maker was a but tired and trembling al all the minute filing, so the picture is subpar, sorry.



Look, how happy our little Hero on Scks is, now he has the control of all those locks to, with his:

"One Key to rule them All"

Well back on-topic, as promised here a pic of the fitted cases looked at from the front, four meters away, but as i looked at the pictures i saw the cross i used to get the camera aligned with the bike was askew becaus the frontwheel had turned a little while mounting the cases...





If you look carefully,youllsee the rear tire stick out a little right instead of both way, so the"right" case now hardly to be seen left in the fot sticks out a little more, will do it again then perfectly aligned.


Width over the verry handy bumperrails is a whopping 101cm with the 45 Ltr, which will be 103,5 with the grabrails (aka zimmerframes) installed, the 33 case is 23 cm on that point, whereas the 45 is 32cm.
The handlebars with Yamaha guards on them are only 97cm, so with this setup youll have to have some extra room next to it, so keep the filtering space betwen the mirrors and your safe, don't use the space above car mirrors with the handlebars though, then youll shure collect some carpaint on the bumpers :mad:
So two 33 will make 84,5cm on a standard bike. or 82 with my setup, and two 45, well that wouldbe just filtering suicide with 122,5 cm !
Allthough you could opt to push the bushes out of the zimmers, and widen the holes a little to push the Givi receptors in the rails (they are plastic) dont drillall the way through but leave a little breast on the inside of the rail, so the giviknob, keeps them nicely secured to the frame.


(instead of getting stuck in a doorway, the guide the case along, feelskinda weird though:-0

ErnsTT thanks for the details. Not to be to much of a PITA, but could you give us some pics from the back, direct on so we can see the offset difference between the left and right rack and the spacing with the 33 and 45L case? I am undecided about going with the small and large or possibly just the 33 on both. Pics help me decide. ;)

Where did you get your nice Yamaha stickons?

At the dealers,they've got them in several diameters, smaller goin sixes, biger in two's, they are made of nice softisch plastic so the followany curvature, the big one'seven go on the very round tank of the XT

Thanks ErnsTT for the info on changing the Givi tumblers!!! I keyed my two Trekkers alike this morning with one good hand and one bad (broken wrist) hand....
