While I have had really good luck with the Kenda Big Block, anything that is a "square block" design should work fine. I would not recommend any kind of "chevron style" knobby if you are looking for maximum safe traction off road. Just keep in mind the safer the tire, the less miles you will get out of it. You are going to get a lot of opinions on what tire to use. I do not consider tire wear life as a guide to what tire to use.

I went on a rally in the CA desert (Mojave National Preserve) in May. It was a mixture of deep sand, lava, hardpack, and rocks. Almost everyone was running TK 80's. The one guy that was rolling on the Mitas EO 7's ended up crashing in the sand. I actually thought of getting some Mitas E07's or Heidenau K60's. For true offroad riding those tires just wont cut it. They are pretty much a hard pack fire road only tire.

FWIW, I have a set of Michelin Wild 3's ready to spoon on my Tenere.

Hope my opinion helps you decide and enjoy your ride!!
