I'm an engineering geek and doing investigations into tire failures and working with the tire manufacturers taught me a lot about why tire pressure is so important. The simple version is that pressure minimizes localized flexing of the sidewalls because flexing rubber heats, which softens it till it releases the fabric plies which are the strength of the tire. Found this video and it actually shows how localized the flexing is even with proper pressure. It also shows why you can't repair the tire shoulder or sidewall.
