Tipping. It’s getting out of hand.

Rant: I am seeing more and more when I order food and pre pay it asks for a tip. Since when do you tip for good service before you get any kind of service?

I don’t mind tipping and generously when I receive good service. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around tipping when I pay at a counter, go and get my own food and drinks from a dispenser and pick up my own plastic utensils. What am I giving a tip for? Rant over.

Totally agree, I tip for good SERVICE. No service, no tip.

I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide.
Generally I do not tip for counter service. Maybe if we are doing a long complicated order or something sure toss a few bucks in a jar.

We had a truck towed the other day for work. The tow driver mentioned 4 times that he took tips before he even hooked the truck....Dude you are charging over $300 for the fing tow and you want a tip? Get bent! I think the boss said something like "I accept kickbacks for tow referral services".

TIPS = To Insure Prompt Service.

In that regard, if I really need prompt service, I will tip ahead of time to ensure it. On the clock, I have walked in, tossed a $10 bill down and explained I am in a hurry, this is my order, I'm headed to the bathroom and I need to get out of here fast. The food was always on the counter waiting when I got back.

to be fair,
when prepaying with a card [debit or credit] the 'machine' has been programmed this way for our convenience,
the bigger issue, IMO, is as consumers we haven't been taught by our card companies
how to scroll quickly through the screens to finish the transaction and to get back on the road...
good rant though, I like it.....

That would work if you were giving a tip before service happened, which perhaps you do in your example but that's not how tips work for most of us at this point. Also, it should then be TEPS as the correct grammatical phrase would be To Ensure Prompt Service.

Nonetheless, I hate seeing a dirty Styrofoam cup with TIPS written on it at every place I go. I don't have a lot of shame, so I don't put any money in those cups. Having the option on the new point of sale screens that get flipped over towards you when you purchase something make it a bit more of a way to make you feel shamed, I guess carrying cash is an option?

The only time I tip, is when I sit down at a table....am given a menu....and my drinks & food are brought to me. If it is a place that I frequent, and the wait staff is the same....I tip excessively. It's a variation of Eric's method. When they know you, and know that their service is appreciated, it's ALWAYS better service. Otherwise, I tip in the appropriate amount for the service I received. I don't feel obliged to tip for either no service (Subway or CiCi's) or crappy service. Left the "one penny" as a tip once, completely appropriate in this case, and the waitress followed me out to the parking lot and threw it at me.

I figure it is a credit card/ bank thing to add it to the slip. It means little. But I just now donated to a 'cause' online, and they asked if I wanted to add a tip?!?! Now that is bull shit.

I went to Europe last year, was told, not to tip much at all. Now I am really confused. oh well. Guess I'll just go for a ride.

Come to Oz. We hardly ever tip. The US tipping culture is spreading around the world like a disease. Not required outside the US generally but I am happy to tip in the USA as I like the service in bars and restaurants. Not so much for looking at my bag.

I tip at least 25% worldwide regardless of how good of service I get. At Starbucks and fast food I give 50% tip. Those who give less than 20% are just cheap bastards.

At supermarkets I give a 20 spot to the kid who bags my groceries.

At gas stations I give 5-10 bucks to the attendant to offset the price of cheap fuel. I’m fortunate enough to live in a state where gas prices are dirt cheap.

Satire doesn't really play well on the internet.

I don't tip for take out or for alcohol portions of a bill. After that it's in proportion to the service given. Some places still pay wait staff with the assumption they get tips. A lot of people just don't tip at all. Decades ago when I delivered pizza, the family that always tipped $5 always got hot pizzas! I tried my best for everyone, but they knew they were at the extreme edge of the delivery zone.

I was in a truck stop in Kansas a couple of days ago and the was a sign with a mailbox type slot, the sign said something like if the bathrooms are clean please feel free to leave a tip, if they are dirty please let us know.
So now someone I don't even see wants money for something I expect to be a given?
I wanted to take a picture but didn't want to take my phone out while in the bathroom...

My rant is this: I don’t mind tipping if a server is getting paid below minimum wage- ie tipping wage.

I however feel that employers who let employees put out tip jars to supplement their income are the problem. For example my daughter worked at a cookie store and she started to depend on the tip jar while making a wage of 9.00 an hour. I had to explain to her that if she wanted to make more than what she was making she needed to improve her skill set, not depend on tips in an entry level job.

It especially rubs me the wrong way when you pay at a counter before you get your food and any service has been given, and it asks for a tip.

If you are wait staff and are getting paid below minimum wage, I will gladly tip. If your employer is too cheap and relies on guilting people into tipping. Get a better job.

TIPS = Totally Inappropriate Pay Scheme...
Tips should be the icing on the cake for good service, not the bulk of a person's wage. My partner is from Yorkshire (financially cautious). To her mind tipping is literally a waste of money. You already paid the required amount, you don't give more. The employer should pay the staff better. She thinks I'm crackers for tipping.

I have heard that in some of the very expensive restaurants in NY that waiters can bid for a position to work at a restaurant. Sometimes paying thousands for the right to work for no wages but access to huge tips. I have no idea if this is true. Could just be an urban legend.
